Madame ButterflyGiacomo Puccini, staged with unflagging success on the world's largest opera stages, had its world premiere in Milan, at the Teatro alla Scala in 1904. After the war, the Wrocław Opera staged the play in 1946 (the premiere took place under the musical direction of Stefan Syryłło, directed by Stanisław Drabik, and set by Witold Fedorski together with Jerzy Feldman), and then in 1949, 1952 and 1993. After years of absence, she returned to the Wrocław stage in a new version directed by Giancarlo del Monaco, which retells the story of the geisha Cio-Cio-San, who has no memory of falling in love with an American naval officer. He treats his affection, sealed by a marriage vow, with maturity, while Lieutenant Pinkerton sees this relationship as an exotic joke. When he has to leave Japan, promises Cio-Cio-San back. He's back, but on his terms.
