Inspired by the famous (and scandalous) Manon Lescaut published some 150 years earlier by the Abbé Prévost, Manon, a comic opera in five acts, won, from its creation in Paris in 1884, a public success that has never been denied: Jules Massenet's heroine soon established herself, alongside Bizet's Carmen, among the most popular in the French operatic repertoire. It is true that the thwarted destiny of Manon and her unfortunate suitor, the Chevalier des Grieux, cruel and overwhelming, is the ideal pretext for a profusion of arias of great beauty, through which Massenet imposes himself as the "historian music of the female soul", in the words of Debussy... After a first meeting for Pelléas et Mélisande in 2007, Marc Minkowski reunited with Olivier Py in this production created in Geneva in 2016,

Inspiré du fameux (et scandaleux) Manon Lescaut publié quelque 150 ans auparavant par l’Abbé Prévost, Manon, opéra-comique en cinq actes, remporta, dès sa création à Paris en 1884, un succès public qui ne s’est jamais démenti : l’héroïne de Jules Massenet ne tarda pas à s’imposer, aux côtés de la Carmen de Bizet, parmi les plus populaires du répertoire lyrique français. Il est vrai que la destinée contrariée de Manon et de son infortuné soupirant, le Chevalier des Grieux, cruelle et bouleversante, est le prétexte idéal à une débauche d’airs de toute beauté, à travers lesquels Massenet s’impose comme l’« historien musical de l’âme féminine », selon le mot de Debussy... Après une première rencontre pour Pelléas et Mélisande en 2007, Marc Minkowski retrouve Olivier Py dans cette production créée à Genève en 2016, dans un décor d’hôtels borgnes et de néons crus : portée par un duo de chanteurs superlatif – la soprano américaine Nadine Sierra, nouvelle superstar du chant lyrique, et l’époustouflant ténor Benjamin Bernheim –, Manon redevient ici une héroïne tragiquement moderne, qui, comme Lulu, rêve de conquérir un monde qui la rejette.
