When Lady Harriet Durham, a damsel of the English queen, is once again terribly bored, she comes up with the saving idea: Together with her confidant Nancy, she disguises herself as the farm maid »Martha« and promptly lets the rich tenant Plumkett buy her at the Richmond market and his foster brother Lyonel. Naturally, the noble ladies there prove to be of little use for housework - but all the more suitable for other things...

Loriot's legendary production (first developed in 1986 at the Staatstheater Stuttgart) does not omit the soulful passages in Flotow's musically refined opera, which had its extremely successful premiere in Vienna in 1847. In Loriot's typical detailed interpretation, he not only makes the sentimental plot endangered by magical irony bearable, but also creates a delicate framework in stage design and costumes with his artistic skills.

Als sich Lady Harriet Durham, ein Edelfräulein der englischen Königin, wieder einmal schrecklich langweilt, kommt ihr die rettende Idee: Gemeinsam mit ihrer Vertrauten Nancy verkleidet sie sich als Bauernmagd »Martha« und lässt sich auf dem Markt von Richmond auch prompt vom reichen Pächter Plumkett und seinem Ziehbruder Lyonel engagieren. Naturgemäß erweisen sich die edlen Damen dort als wenig brauchbar für die Hausarbeit – doch umso geeigneter für anderes…

Loriots legendäre Inszenierung (zuerst 1986 am Staatstheater Stuttgart erarbeitet) unterschlägt nicht die gefühlvollen Passagen in Flotows musikalisch raffinierter Spieloper, die 1847 in Wien äußerst erfolgreich uraufgeführt wurde. In Loriot-typischer detailgenauer Deutung macht er die von Sentimentalität gefährdete Handlung durch zauberhafte Ironie nicht nur erträglich, sondern schafft dazu auch noch mit seinem bildnerischen Können einen delikaten Rahmen in Bühnenbild und Kostümen.
