Goethe Faustjának számtalan zenei feldolgozása létezik, amelyek közül minden bizonnyal Arrigo Boito Mefistofele című operája áll legközelebb a drámai költemény szellemiségéhez. A zeneszerzőt komolyan érdekelte a metafizika, nem meglepő tehát, hogy beleszeretett Goethe monumentális művébe, különösen Mefisztó alakjába, s őt tette meg operája középpontjának. Az Isten és a Sátán közötti harcot, illetve az emberi lét misztériumát sokrétűen feldolgozó mű filozofikusságát jól példázza Hamvas Béla néhány sora, melyet Kovalik Balázs, az opera 2010-es lélegzetelállító előadásának rendezője idéz: „A legnagyobb rejtély nem az, hogy az embert a végtelen valahová az anyag és a csillagkozmosz közepébe hajította, hanem hogy ebben a fogságban önmagunkban olyan gondolatokat ébresztettünk, amelyek elég hatalmasak ahhoz, hogy életünk semmiségét kétségbe vonjuk.” A zeneszerző, aki a librettót is jegyzi, jelentős költőnek is bizonyult: kiváló operaszövegkönyveket írt, például Verdi számára az Otellóét, a Falstaffét, részben a Simon Boccanegráét, valamint Ponchielli számára – álnéven – a Giocondáét.

There are innumerable musical adaptations of Goethe’s Faust, of which Arrigo Boito ’s opera Mefistofele is certainly the closest to the spirituality of the dramatic poem. The composer was seriously interested in metaphysics, so it is not surprising that he fell in love with Goethe's monumental work, especially the figure of Mephistopheles, and made him the center of his opera. A few lines by Béla Hamvas, quoted by Balázs Kovalik, the director of the opera's breathtaking performance in 2010, illustrate the philosophical nature of the work between God and Satan and the mystery of human existence in many ways:The greatest mystery is not that he has thrown man into the midst of infinity somewhere in the middle of matter and the star cosmos, but that in this captivity we have awakened in ourselves thoughts powerful enough to cast doubt on the nothingness of our lives. ”The composer, who also writes the libretto, has also proved to be a significant poet: he has written excellent opera textbooks, such as Otello for Verdi , Falstaff , partly for Simon Boccanegrá , and Giocondá for Ponchielli .
