Film légendaire, pierre de touche du cinéma expressionniste et de l’imaginaire dystopique, Metropolis est l’un des chefs-d’œuvre de Fritz Lang – poème visuel qui trouve son pendant musical dans la partition de Martin Matalon, dirigée par Kazushi Ōno.

Pour la version restaurée du film Metropolis, le compositeur argentin Martin Matalon a composé en 1995 une partition originale, initialement destinée à seize instrumentistes et dispositif électronique, dont ce ciné-concert exceptionnel inaugure la version orchestrale.

Calquée sur le rythme de la narration filmique, l’œuvre de Matalon devient, grâce aux effets de spatialisation permis par l’électronique, un véritable double musical du poème visuel de Fritz Lang. Échos de jazz et de musiques extra-européennes, sons acoustiques et réfractés fusionnent pour renouveler en profondeur la caractérisation des situations et des personnages, engendrant des hypothèses inédites et contribuant ainsi à la riche histoire de l’interprétation de Metropolis.

Legendary film, touchstone of expressionist cinema and dystopian imagination, Metropolis is one of Fritz Lang's masterpieces – a visual poem that finds its musical counterpart in the score by Martin Matalon, conducted by Kazushi Ōno.

For the restored version of the film Metropolis , the Argentinian composer Martin Matalon composed an original score in 1995, initially intended for sixteen instrumentalists and electronic device, of which this exceptional cine-concert inaugurates the orchestral version.

Modeled on the rhythm of film narration, Matalon's work becomes, thanks to the effects of spatialization enabled by electronics, a veritable musical double of Fritz Lang's visual poem. Echoes of jazz and music from outside Europe, acoustic and refracted sounds merge to deeply renew the characterization of situations and characters, generating new hypotheses and thus contributing to the rich history of the interpretation of Metropolis .
