The ballet Rite of Spring changed the course of musical history and created a scandal in 1913 with its exciting rhythms and innovative language. The commotion drowned the music and 40 people from the audience had to be escorted out. It was both the choreography, the scenography and the music that upset. Today it is the favorite of many, not least after Disney had dinosaurs dance to the pagan ritual music in the film Fantasia in 1940. And history would thank Stravinsky. The Rite of Spring became one of the three ballets, along with The Firebird and Petrushka, that put the composer on the music map forever. The evening begins with Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No. 2 with acclaimed Canadian pianist Bruce Liu, former winner of the Chopin Competition. It was the Second Piano Concerto from 1901 that paved the way for Sergei Rachmaninov’s world fame as a pianist. The concert has gone down in history as one of the most beloved and melodious, as well as virtuosically challenging. In popular culture, it went far when the melody in the second movement (adagio sostenuto) was copied by the singer Eric Carmen in his power ballad “All by myself”.
