Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is unique in the history of opera. Like other opera composers, he not only dedicated himself exclusively to this genre, but also excelled in all musical genres.

Mozart knew how to use the expressiveness of the singing voice to shape the characters of the tragic and comic heroes of traditional opera.

In contrast to instrumental music, operas were only created as commissioned work. In Salzburg there was neither theater in the strict sense nor opera. Mozart earned his living as a court organist and with commissioned work.

In 1781 he left Salzburg for good and with the singspiel “The Abduction from the Seraglio” Mozart successfully entered the Viennese opera scene.

In 1784, the meeting with the Italian librettist Lorenzo da Ponte was of crucial importance. From then on, Mozart was free to choose the subject of his operas. Da Ponte had a job at the Viennese court and worked closely with Mozart between 1784 and 1789.
