"One day you may hear from a score that will be dedicated 'to the memory of an angel' what I feel and for which I can find no expression today," writes Alban Berg to his friend Alma Mahler. He dedicated his violin concerto to her daughter Manon Gropius, who was dying of polio. Musically, he describes the carefree character of the young girl, her agony and her redemption. The fact that this work becomes a requiem for himself sounds like an irony of fate.

Let’s go back 24 years: After Gustav Mahler’s death, his wife Alma found the sketches for his 10th symphony in an iron case and wrote: “These tremendous words of love from the afterlife seem like a manifestation to me.” Apart from Mahler's widow, only a few know that there is now a tenth alongside the hitherto unpublished “Lied von der Erde” and Mahler's 9th symphony. Today this tenth is celebrated as a vision of future music.
