"Va, pensiero, sull'ali dorate" (Fly, thought, on golden wings...) - who does not know this famous chorus, which became a liberation song sung throughout Italy at the time of the premiere of the opera. The popularity of the operatic story about the liberation of the Jews from Babylonian captivity went hand in hand with the desire of the Italian population for liberation from Austrian-Habsburg rule and the subsequent unification of Italy. Today, the work is popular mainly due to the evocative musical treatment of the well-known biblical story.
