"Jerusalem", "The Wicked", "Prophecy", "Crushed Idol" - the titles of four acts of Giuseppe Verdi's opera "Nabucco" (1842) outline its themes: the ancient world, religious conflicts, the role of the individual in history. There is also a love line in Nabucco, but it was not this that most inspired Verdi, who sacrificed the central lyrical duet for another scene with a stern high priest prophet. Together with the librettist Themistocle Solera, the young composer created an essay about other equally strong passions: the thirst for power and the thirst for freedom. Long before Wagner, Verdi showed the underlying cause of unbridled, violent lust for power - the lack of love. He also showed its consequences - violence, madness, death; He also showed the ways of overcoming - love, repentance. These ideas are revealed in the images of the two main characters of the opera - the titular hero, Babylonian king-conqueror Nebuchadnezzar, and his merciless daughter Abigail. Both received amazingly expressive and extremely demanding vocal parts. The large-scale solo scenes of the first "Verdi" baritone and the first "Verdi" soprano in history, their duet duel belong to the brightest pages of the composer's heritage. The real hit from Nabucco was the choir of captive Jews Va, pensiero, sull'ali dorate - "Fly, thought, on golden wings", which turned into an unofficial anthem of the Italian Republic.

On the main opera stage of St. Petersburg, Nabucco was staged twice: about ten years after the Milan premiere (1851) and more than a hundred years after the death of its author (2005). In 2023, the Mariinsky Theater will replenish its rich Verdi collection with a new production of the opera, with which the world fame of the brilliant Italian master once began. Christina Batyushina

Вместе с либреттистом Темистокле Солерой молодой композитор создал сочинение о других, не менее сильных страстях: о жажде власти и жажде свободы. На главной оперной сцене Петербурга «Набукко» ставился дважды: спустя примерно десять лет после миланской премьеры (1851) и через сто с лишним лет после смерти его автора (2005).
