Le temps de la Nativité occupe une place capitale dans la musique religieuse de Marc-Antoine Charpentier, et l’on peut même affirmer qu’aucun autre compositeur français du Grand Siècle n’a offert une œuvre aussi diversifiée que lui pour célébrer Noël. Antiennes Ô de l’Avent, Noëls instrumentaux, mais aussi Histoires sacrées latines (ou oratorios) et Pastorales en française : le compositeur emploie les genres les plus variés pour rendre compte de cet épisode central de la liturgie chrétienne. Ces pièces ont aussi ceci de singulier, qu’elles représentent l’un des rares points de rencontre entre musique savante et musique populaire que l’on puisse observer dans la France de la fin du XVIIe siècle.

Fin connaisseur de Charpentier, dont il a contribué à la redécouverte dans les années 1980, William Christie a maintes fois dirigé ces œuvres devenues emblématique des Arts Florissants. Pour autant, cette nouvelle série de concerts s’annonce comme une première par l’originalité de sa forme. D’abord, en proposant une mise en espace de ces pièces liturgiques, de manière à mettre en valeur leur dimension éminemment dramatique ; ensuite, en en faisant ressentir toute la diversité au travers d'un programme mettant à l’honneur tantôt les grandes pièces sacrées en langue latine, tantôt les pastorales plus populaires en français.

The time of the Nativity occupies a capital place in the religious music of Marc-Antoine Charpentier, and one can even affirm that no other French composer of the Grand Siècle has offered a work as diversified as him to celebrate Christmas. Antiphons Ô of Advent, instrumental Noëls, but also Latin sacred stories (or oratorios) and Pastorales in French: the composer uses the most varied genres to account for this central episode of the Christian liturgy. These pieces are also unique in that they represent one of the rare meeting points between learned music and popular music that can be observed in France at the end of the 17th century.

A fine connoisseur of Charpentier, whose rediscovery he contributed to in the 1980s, William Christie has repeatedly directed these works which have become emblematic of Les Arts Florissants. However, this new series of concerts promises to be a first by the originality of its form. First, by proposing a setting in space of these liturgical pieces, so as to highlight their eminently dramatic dimension; then, by making all the diversity felt through a program honoring sometimes the great sacred pieces in Latin, sometimes the more popular pastorals in French.
