Nie ma wątpliwości, że tak potoczyste, niepretensjonalne motywy i frazy, jakie rozpoczynają Koncert e-moll op. 64 napisał Felix Mendelssohn. Może to zresztą najpiękniejszy dziewiętnastowieczny koncert skrzypcowy? Na pewno bardzo romantyczny, chociaż lekki; pamiętajmy, że Elfy w muzyce Mendelssohna zamieszkują. A wyważenie liryzmu i efektownej wirtuozerii w partii solowej to jednak wyraźna tęsknota za klasycznym porządkiem.

Spośród siedmiu symfonii Jeana Sibeliusa to właśnie III Symfonia C-dur op. 52 wydaje się najważniejsza. Pisana w latach 1904–1907 wyznacza punkt zwrotny w jego wyobrażeniach o formie i treści nowoczesnych dzieł. Sibelius przekroczył granicę zza której się nie wraca, jakby powiedział: przyszłością mojej muzyki jest „klasyczna prostota”. Zerwał z romantycznym rozbuchaniem i zwrócił się w stronę brzmień surowszych, nawet chłodnych, za to działających na wyobraźnię. Jakoś wyjątkowo pasuje aura III Symfonii do wyobrażeń o tajemniczej Północy.

There is no doubt that such fluent, unpretentious motifs and phrases that open the Concerto in E minor, Op. 64 was written by Felix Mendelssohn. Perhaps it is the most beautiful 19th-century violin concerto? Certainly very romantic, although light; let us remember that the Elves in Mendelssohn's music inhabit. And the balancing of lyricism and spectacular virtuosity in the solo part is a clear longing for the classical order.

Of the seven symphonies by Jean Sibelius, it is the Third Symphony in C major, Op. 52 seems to be the most important. Written between 1904 and 1907, it marks a turning point in his ideas about the form and content of modern works. Sibelius crossed the border from which there is no return, as if to say: the future of my music is "classical simplicity". He broke with the romantic outburst and turned towards sounds that were more raw, even cold, but still stimulating the imagination. Somehow, the aura of the Third Symphony fits the imagination of the mysterious North.
