Join us in collaboration with Sound Mind for a panel discussion delving into the multifaceted career paths as musicians and the diverse identities that shape the art and artists within it. This year, we're excited to bring together a panel of distinguished musicians and mental health professionals to explore the profound connections between classical musicians and their identities, celebrating the rich tapestry of experiences that inspire their craft, accompanied by a commissioned work that represents the heart of our theme, performed by New World Symphony Fellows.

This event is open to classical musicians, music students, educators, composers, industry professionals and anyone interested in the intersection of classical music and identity. 

Between the Notes: Exploring Identities as Artists is made possible with support from Sound Mind, New World Symphony and the National Alliance on Mental Illness. This event is a NWS BLUE Project. Standing for Build, Learn, Understand and Experiment, the NWS BLUE program is a combination of leadership and entrepreneurship training and hands-on experimentation that provides Fellows with a comprehensive skill set to complement their musical training.

2:00-2:30 PM:   Opening Remarks and World Premiere Performance

Meet the panelists and hear the world premiere of a commissioned work created specifically for this event. The piece, written by Grace Ann Lee and co-commissioned by Sound Mind and New World Symphony, explores the theme of identity and mental health conditions. 

2:30-3:30 PM:   Panel Discussion 

Our esteemed panelists, each with a unique background and perspective, will discuss the interplay between identity and classical music. They will explore how their personal experiences and diverse backgrounds influence their careers and lives. 

3:30-4:00 PM:   Audience Q&A

Engage with the panelists in an interactive Q&A following the panel discussion.

4:00-4:30 PM:   Mingling

Connect with fellow classical musicians, artists and mental health professionals.

The music of composer Grace Ann Lee (b.1996) is based on everyday sounds, imagries, and experiences like raindrops, refracting light, and traffic jams, recreated into dynamic and emotive soundscapes. A recipient of 2023 ASCAP Morton Gould Award, Her recent collaborators include the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, Buffalo Chamber Players, Front Porch, Left Coast Chamber Ensemble, among others. She holds commissions from Sound Mind, New World Symphony, United States Air Force Heritage of America Band, and Michael Karsher’s Young New Yorkers’ Chorus. Lee has recently been selected as a composition fellow for the 2024 at Tanglewood Music Center and has previously been the composition fellow at the Aspen Music Festival and Copland House’s CULTIVATE program. A graduate of Indiana University and Rice University, she is currently a Doctoral candidate at the University of Michigan.
