A timeless, eternal story. The tragic subject of Oedipus Rexhad caught the attention of the great Igor Stravinsky in the 1920s, during his 'neoclassical' phase, and represented the tragedy as a 'still life': "I wanted to leave tragedy, as tragedy, behind the opera. I thought of distilling it with this the dramatic essence to be free to focus more attention on a purely musical dramatization". Stravinsky decided to entrust the libretto to Jean Cocteau (with whom he had been a friend since the days of the first Parisian seasons of the Ballets Russes) and to an action that was essential to leave room for his dramatization. Still Stravinskij: "Except Tiresias, the Shepherd and the Messenger, the characters remain in their costumes and in the constructed masks. Only the heads and arms move. They must have theOedipus Rex conceived by Ildebrando Pizzetti in 1903 for the text of Sophocles staged by Gustavo Salvini: intense and tragic, the King finally expelled from his city, does not remain entirely alone, his journey is in fact accompanied by the only person who he seems to have pity and compassion, Antigone.

Una storia senza tempo, eterna. Il soggetto tragico dell'Edipo Re aveva colto l'attenzione del grande Igor Stravinskij negli anni Venti, durante la sua fase 'neoclassica', e rappresentò la tragedia come una 'natura morta': "Desideravo lasciare la tragedia, come tragedia, dietro l'opera. Pensavo di distillarne con ciò l'essenza drammatica per essere libero di concentrare maggiormente l'attenzione su di una drammatizzazione puramente musicale". Stravinskij decise di affidarsi, per il libretto a Jean Cocteau (di cui era amico fin dai tempi delle prime stagioni parigine dei Ballets Russes) e a un'azione che fosse essenziale per lasciare spazio alla sua drammatizzazione. Sempre Stravinskij: "Tranne Tiresia, il Pastore e il Messaggero, i personaggi restano nei loro costumi e nelle maschere costruite. Si muovono solo le teste e le braccia. Debbono avere l'aspetto di statue viventi". Ben diverso era l'Edipo Re pensato da Ildebrando Pizzetti nel 1903 per il testo di Sofocle messo in scena da Gustavo Salvini: intenso e tragico, il Re infine discacciato dalla sua città, non rimane del tutto solo, il suo cammino è infatti accompagnato dall’unica persona che di lui sembra aver pietà e compassione, Antigone.
