An evening of Spanish zarzuela and tangos, French song, exquisite operetta and emotion-filled opera arias with star soprano Celine Byrne whose voice has been described as ‘extraordinary’ (The Irish Times), ‘magnificent’ (Irish Independent) and ‘perhaps the most beautiful voice I’ve ever heard’ (The Arts Desk).

Proinnsías Ó Duinn, now into his seventh decade conducting the National Symphony Orchestra, makes a welcome return to the podium. 

Spain in all its sun-kissed, sultry splendour is celebrated in Pablo Luna’s vivacious De España vengo and Carlos Gardel’s Tango (Pour Una Cabeza) arranged by John Williams, while Delibes borrows Spanish-accented passion for the vivacious vocal splendour of Les filles de Cadix even as a hint of the shadows cast by the Iberian sun is heard in Granados’ ‘La Maja y el Ruiseñor’ (Goyescas), a plaintive tale of a maiden and a nightingale.

The tumultuous highs and lows of the heart are on display in the coquettish Viennese sensuality of Lehár’s ‘Meine Lippen, sie küssen so heiss’ (Giuditta), the noble celebration of Wagner’s ‘Dich, teure Halle’ (Tannhäuser), the forlorn resignation and leave-taking of ‘Ebben? Ne andrò Iontana’ from Catalani’s La Wally, and in the haunting agony of Puccini’s ‘In quelle trine morbide’ (Manon Lescaut) and chill horror of Turandot’s ‘Tu, che di gel sei cinta’.

With its dazzling display of coloratura brilliance, Gounod’s sparkling ‘Jewel Song’ from Faust promises to be an unmissable highlight.
