Born a hundred years ago, the composer Iannis Xenakis still continues today, more than twenty years after his death, to fascinate and surprise through his singular work, off the beaten track, in the image of his life.

His Oresteïa , inspired by Virgil's Oresteia trilogy , is an unidentified musical object: a work at the crossroads, at the same time stage music, opera, oratorio and descriptive music. Xenakis does not seek to recreate the original music of Greek tragedies but focuses on the ritual aspect of theater and uses effects to grip the listener, such as this prophecy of Cassandra sung by the falsetto voice of the baritone in a almost hallucinatory incantation and the torment of the Erinyes translated by a deafening din of percussions.

The story of The Oresteia , consisting of Agamemnon , The Choephoros and The Eumenides , begins at the end of the Trojan War. After long years of absence, Agamemnon brings back Cassandra, the most beautiful daughter of the king of the conquered city, to whom Apollo had granted the gift of prophecy. Before entering the palace of Argos, Cassander is seized with prophetic delirium and sees the death that awaits her, as well as that of Agamemnon and the crimes of the Atreides that will follow... Xenakis makes this trilogy the one of his most emblematic works.
