Written in 1733, Orlando was the first of the three operas for which Handel drew on the Renaissance masterpiece Orlando Furioso by Ludovico Ariosto, a verse epic chronicling the chivalric adventures of medieval French knights. Though Orlando is rarely performed, by comparison with Alcina and Ariodante, it is musically and dramatically the equal of both. Orlando is a fascinating ‘magic’ opera, brimming with some of Handel’s most glorious music and inventive stage imagery.
