"A triumph" (ABC), "enthralling" (Die Presse), a production "at the highest level" (Corriere della sera) and of "incredible quality" (La Vanguardia) - With Zubin Mehta conducting the orchestra of the Palau de les Arts "Reina Sofía" in Valencia, and three excellent soloists - Gregory Kunde, Maria Agresta and Carlos Álvarez - who form the main protagonist trio, this Otello is destined to establish itself as one of the most memorable stagings of this work.

In an elegant, simple set dominated by a large disc that rises and falls to suggest closeness or distance between the protagonists, director Davide Livermore focuses on the inner conflicts at the heart of Otello (Kunde ), Desdemona (Agresta) and Jago (Álvarez) gnaw. A clever and effective use of large screen projection and understated costumes round out Livermore's directing.

The renowned Viennese daily newspaper Die Presse wrote that Livermore's Otello was "exalted" by Kunde's singing. Kunde has successfully interpreted both Verdi's and Rossini's Otello in one year, perhaps the first tenor to have done so. While Álvarez "brims with devilish cynicism," Agresta sings with "heartfelt cantabilità" (Die Presse). Under the direction of Maestro Zubin Mehta, the Orquestra de la Comunitat Valenciana has truly become one of the leading European opera orchestras.
