Anti-social fisherman gets boys from the poor house and drives them to their deaths through slave labor – this is how the tabloid »Peter Grimes« would summarize the headline. But what Benjamin Britten makes of this story about a poor fishing village on the English east coast is much more. In his first opera from 1945, the English composer succeeds in creating a whole world with all its opposites and contradictions: the small town of Borough, the outsider Peter Grimes, who dreams of his rise, the teacher Ellen, who until the end stops him, the ignorance and bigotry of society. His protagonist is brutal and vulnerable, guilty and discriminated at the same time. The fact that director Markus Dietz was originally an actor is a good prerequisite for creating such a difficult character study. Having already staged the visually stunning Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny at the National Theater, he now turns to Britten's veristic opera, which he reads as a moral challenge to the audience.
