Né à Los-Angeles, Stephen Kovacevich fait ses débuts à 11 ans en Californie. À 18 ans, il s’installe en Angleterre et commence à travailler avec Dame Myra Hess.

Bien que renommé pour ses interprétations de compositeurs classiques, ses goûts musicaux sont très éclectiques et des compositeurs tels que Rodney Bennett et John Taverner lui ont dédicacé des concertos. Récemment il a crée Southen Lament de l’américain Stephen Montague au Cheltenham International Music Festival ainsi qu’aux BBC Proms et au Royal Festival halte Londres.

Pianiste de caractère, il burine les textes avec une sonorité pleine. Sa connaissance approfondie des oeuvres est là mais son regard est toujours neuf, cherchant toujours à découvrir et à faire apparaître la simplicité, la tendresse ou la rage du compositeur.

Stephen Kovacevich a été l’invité des Berliner Philharmoniker avec Simon Rattle, du London Philharmonic avec Kurt Masur, du Montreal Symphony avec Charles Dutoit, Cleveland Orchestra, Pittsburg Symphony, du Los Angeles Philharmonic, et du philharmonique d’Israël.

Il a joué les 5 concertos de Beethoven avec le Scottish Chamber Orchestra et Joseph Swensen.

Stephen Kovacevich se consacre aussi à la musique de chambre, en témoigne le légendaire enregistrement des sonates pour violoncelle de Beethoven avec Jacqueline Dupré, ainsi que Bartok avec Martha Argerich. Il a également pour partenaires Steven Isserlis Nigel Kennedy, Renaud Capu-çon, Lynn Harrell, Sarah Chang, Truls Mork et Emmanuel Pahud.

Stephen Kovacevich pratique aussi la direction d’orchestre. Depuis ses débuts en 1984 à la tête du Houston Symphony il a dirigé le Chamber Orchestra of Europe, le City of Birmingham Symphony, le Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, BBC symphony, London Philharmonic, Youth Orchestra, Sydney Sympho-ny, New Zealand Symphony, les orchestres de Copenhague et de Lisbonne et le Los Angeles avec lequel il collabore régulièrement. De 1986 à 199O il a été chef principal invité de l’Australian Chamber Orchestra.

Stephen Kovacevich a enregistré pour Philips qui a regroupé en un coffret de 25 CD en 2016 l’intégralité de ses enregistrements et E.M.I / Warner Classics qui a publié l’intégrale des 32 sonates de Beethoven unanimement salué par la presse internationale.
