In the spring of 1890, Alexander Pushkin's fashionable mystical story The Queen of Spades inspired Pyotr Tchaikovsky to create a work that was completely new in meaning. In his opera, an anecdotal story about an all-consuming passion for gambling was transformed into a drama with a struggle for a high and bright feeling - love. The main female character was rewritten: from a poor relative, Lisa became the granddaughter of a rich countess with a brilliant fiancé, Prince Yeletsky. And the motivation for Herman's actions comes from a feeling of love for a woman with whom he could not be together due to social status and financial situation. Only in such conditions could the music of Tchaikovsky's opera, impressive to the point of goosebumps with its depth and psychologism, be born.

Taking on the production of The Queen of Spades at the Kirov (now the Mariinsky) Theater in 1984, the conductor and director of the performance, Yuri Temirkanov, set the artist Igor Ivanov the task of recreating the atmosphere of the place and time of the action in the smallest detail. “It must be luxurious, because Tchaikovsky is a great playwright. He wanted to show this little, impoverished Herman in one frock coat, who gets into high society and goes crazy in the end, because he wants to break through there, into this luxury, ”Temirkanov said.

The main signs of St. Petersburg of the Catherine’s era are reproduced in the performance with perfect accuracy: whether it’s the statues and the openwork lattice of the Summer Garden, where the Countess and Herman meet for the first time, a masquerade ball in the house of the capital’s nobleman, or the Winter Canal, into which the desperate Lisa throws herself. Interior details of rooms, barracks, gambling house, all costumes correspond to real historical prototypes. Even military uniforms are made with full compliance with belonging to a particular regiment.

The result was impressive. "The Queen of Spades" in Temirkanov's reading has become a standard example of classical opera directing, has received international recognition and a happy life on the theater stage for many years.

The transfer of the opera production from St. Petersburg to Vladivostok was carried out in December 2015. The first performance was conducted by maestro Valery Gergiev with the participation of the leading soloists of the Mariinsky Theatre. Since then, Primorsky audiences have been able to hear in this opera the legendary interpreters of the main parts (German Vladimir Galuzin, Countess Larisa Dyadkova) and young stars (Elena Stikhina, Yulia Matochkina, Alexei Markov, Roman Burdenko). Now the "Queen of Spades" continues to hospitably receive guest singers and discover new names of soloists of the opera troupe of the Primorsky Stage under the musical direction of the chief conductor of the theater Pavel Smelkov.

Весной 1890 года модная мистическая повесть Александра Пушкина «Пиковая дама» вдохновила Петра Чайковского на создание совершенно нового по смыслу произведения. В его опере анекдотичная история о всепоглощающей страсти к азартным играм трансформировалась в драму с борьбой за высокое и светлое чувство — любовь. Был заново переписан главный женский персонаж: из бедной родственницы Лиза стала внучкой богатой графини с блестящим женихом, князем Елецким. А мотивация поступков Германа — исходит из чувства любви к женщине, с которой он не мог быть вместе по социальному статусу и материальному положению. Только в таких условиях смогла родиться впечатляющая до мурашек своей глубиной и психологизмом музыка оперы Чайковского.

Принимаясь за постановку «Пиковой дамы» в Кировском (ныне — Мариинском) театре в 1984 году, дирижёр и режиссёр спектакля Юрий Темирканов поставил перед художником Игорем Ивановым задачу воссоздания атмосферы места и времени действия в мельчайших деталях. «Должно быть роскошно, потому что Чайковский — великий драматург. Он хотел показать этого маленького, нищего Германа в одном сюртучке, который попадает в высший свет и сходит с ума в конце концов, потому что он хочет пробиться туда, в эту роскошь», — говорил Темирканов.

Главные приметы Петербурга екатерининской эпохи воспроизведены в спектакле с доскональной точностью: будь то статуи и ажурная решётка Летнего сада, где впервые встречаются Графиня и Герман, маскарадный бал в доме столичного вельможи или Зимняя канавка, в которую бросается отчаявшаяся Лиза. Детали интерьера комнат, казарм, игорного дома, все костюмы отвечают реальным историческим прототипам. Даже военные мундиры сделаны с полным соответствием принадлежности к определённому полку.

Результат оказался впечатляющим. «Пиковая дама» в прочтении Темирканова стала эталонным образцом классической оперной режиссуры, получила международное признание и счастливую многолетнюю жизнь на театральной сцене.

Перенос постановки оперы из Петербурга во Владивосток был осуществлён в декабре 2015 года. Первый спектакль прошёл под управлением маэстро Валерия Гергиева при участии ведущих солистов Мариинского театра. С тех пор приморские зрители смогли услышать в этой опере легендарных интерпретаторов главных партий (Германа Владимира Галузина, Графиню Ларисы Дядьковой) и молодых звёзд (Елену Стихину, Юлию Маточкину, Алексея Маркова, Романа Бурденко). Сейчас «Пиковая дама» продолжает гостеприимно принимать приглашённых певцов и открывать новые имена солистов оперной труппы Приморской сцены под музыкальным руководством главного дирижёра театра Павла Смелкова.
