Jedan od najznačajnijih hrvatskih umjetnika novije glazbene povijesti, Blagoje Bersa, školovao se u Trstu, Zadru, Zagrebu i Beču. Karijeru je započeo u Beču, kao zborovođa i savjetnik pri poznatoj izdavačkoj kući Doblinger. Godine 1919. vratio se u Zagreb gdje se zaposlio kao prvi profesor kompozicije i instrumentacije na tada novoutemeljenoj Muzičkoj akademiji. U svojoj klasi odgojio je mnoge kasnije slavne hrvatske skladatelje kao što su Boris Papandopulo, Milo Cipra, Božidar Kunc, Ivan Brkanović. Bersinu glazbu stilski možemo odrediti kao kasnoromantičnu sa zamjetnim utjecajem impresionizma, što čujemo u Sunčanim poljima, skladanima oko 1919. godine u Beču. Lirski i impresionistički dijelovi skladbe isprepliću se s fanfarama u limenim puhačima koji su u duploj postavi od kojih je jedna postava često postavljena na galerije ili iza scene. Upravo sjajnom izvedbom Sunčanih polja u bečkom Musikvereinu, Zagrebačka filharmonija pod ravnanjem tadašnjeg šefa dirigenta Vjekoslava Šuteja zadobila je srca publike i zaradila buran pljesak.

 

Don Juan (ili Don Giovanni u slavnoj operi Wolfganga Amadeusa Mozarta), nadahnuo je mnoge poznate umjetnike, ne samo glazbenike, već i slikare, pisce, kipare… Među njima je i skladatelj Richard Strauss, koji je inače vrlo često posezao za literarnim predlošcima za svoje simfonijske poeme i pjesme (Shakespeare, Cervantes i drugi). Stilski se Strauss nadovezuje na kasnoromantični stil Franza Liszta i Richarda Wagnera, posebno u simfonijskim poemama kao što je Don Juan. U ovoj skladbi orkestar je postao instrument briljantne virtuoznosti i sjaja. Izvanredna orkestracija i zahtjevne dionice solističkih instrumenata i tutti sekcija, pravo su blago za slušatelja. Skladba upravo tako i započinje, bravuroznom temom u cijeloj gudačkoj sekciji. Kasnije se tema nekoliko puta ponavlja, a skladba završava vrlo mirno – kao ugasla svijeća.

 

Jean Sibelius glazbenu naobrazbu stiče u rodnoj Finskoj, a studij kompozicije i violine nastavlja u Berlinu i Beču. Nakon što je proputovao Europu i SAD, s obitelji se vratio u domovinu, u ruralni dio Finske gdje je pronašao mir. Inspiraciju za skladanje pronašao je u prirodi i nordijskoj mitologiji. Njegov glazbeni izričaj je kasnoromantički i modernistički. Sibelius je skladao ukupno sedam simfonija. Prva simfonija nastala je 1899. godine, a iste je godine i praizvedena i to pod ravnanjem samoga skladatelja. No simfonija u tom obliku nije sačuvana jer ju je autor već iduće godine revidirao. Novom praizvedbom ravnao je Robert Kajanus 1900. godine u Berlinu, a upravo je ta izvedba autoru donijela svjetsku slavu i karijeru. Poznato violinističko natjecanje u Helsinkiju nosi upravo Sibeliusovo ime, a u Finskoj je njegov rođendan (8. prosinca) nacionalni praznik - Dan glazbe. Povodom 150. obljetnice njegova rođenja, 2015. godina bila je proglašena Sibeliusovom godinom. Zagrebačka filharmonija te je godine sa Stefanom Milenkovićem prigodno izvela njegov Koncert za violinu u d-molu u prepunoj dvorani Vatroslava Lisinskog. Nezaboravan događaj!

One of the most important Croatian artists of recent music history, Blagoje Bersa , studied in Trieste, Zadar, Zagreb and Vienna. He started his career in Vienna, as a choirmaster and consultant at the well-known publishing house Doblinger . In 1919, he returned to Zagreb, where he was employed as the first professor of composition and instrumentation at the then newly founded Academy of Music. In his class, he trained many later famous Croatian composers such as Boris Papandopulo, Milo Cipra, Božidar Kunc, Ivan Brkanović. Stylistically, Bersa's music can be defined as late romantic with a noticeable influence of impressionism, which we hear in Sunčani polje ,composed around 1919 in Vienna. Lyrical and impressionistic parts of the composition are interwoven with brass fanfare in a double lineup, one of which is often placed in the galleries or behind the scenes. It was with a great performance of Sunny Fields in the Vienna Musikverein that the Zagreb Philharmonic under the direction of the then chief conductor Vjekoslav Šutej won the hearts of the audience and earned thunderous applause.

In this piece, the orchestra became an instrument of brilliant virtuosity and brilliance. Outstanding orchestration and demanding sections of solo instruments and tuttisection, are a real treasure for the listener. The piece begins just like that, with a bravura theme throughout the string section. Later, the theme is repeated several times, and the composition ends very calmly - like an extinguished candle.

 

Jean Sibelius received his musical education in his native Finland, and continued his composition and violin studies in Berlin and Vienna. After traveling to Europe and the USA, he and his family returned to their homeland, to the rural part of Finland, where they found peace. He found inspiration for composing in nature and Norse mythology. His musical expression is late romantic and modernist. Sibelius composed a total of seven symphonies. The first symphonyit was created in 1899, and it was premiered in the same year under the direction of the composer himself. However, the symphony was not preserved in that form because the author already revised it the following year. The new premiere was directed by Robert Kajanus in 1900 in Berlin, and it was this performance that brought the author worldwide fame and career. The famous violinist competition in Helsinki is named after Sibelius, and in Finland his birthday (December 8) is a national holiday - Music Day. On the occasion of the 150th anniversary of his birth, 2015 was declared the year of Sibelius. That year, the Zagreb Philharmonic together with Stefan Milenkovic performed his Violin Concerto in D minor in the packed Vatroslav Lisinski Hall. An unforgettable event!
