Marie and the servant Hans love each other and want to get married. But Marie has long been promised to simple-minded Wenzel, who comes from a rich family. Urged on by cocky matchmaker Kecal, who wants to collect his commission, her parents urge Marie to agree to the arranged marriage. But she blocks herself. Incognito, Marie puts herself in the worst possible light in front of Wenzel. Meanwhile, Hans leads Kecal into believing that he would give up Marie for money. The complications only briefly cause Marie to doubt Hans' loyalty. In the end, the two reunite happily and with parental blessings.

The composer Bedřich Smetana was one of the protagonists in the formation of a Czech national culture in the second half of the 19th century. In particular, "Dalibor" in the serious genre and "The Bartered Bride" in the lighter genre achieved the status of national operas. The latter arose more out of defiance, since Smetana – according to his own statement – ​​had been labeled a “Wagnerian” after his first opera, “Die Brandenburger in Böhmen”. Smetana spiced up his opera, which was set in a rural environment, with melodies reminiscent of Bohemian folk tunes and yet solely arose from the composer's inventive spirit, with country-dance swing and a rousing rhythmic vitality.
