He just can’t let go: Even though Count Almaviva has done away with jus primae noctis, the so-called «right of the first night,» he is still after the maid Susanna, even though she’s about to marry Figaro. It’s an open-and-closed case of sexual harassment, one that Susanna, the Countess, and the employees of the house will no longer tolerate. In his imaginative Zurich production, German stage director Jan Philipp Gloger sets Mozart’s masterwork in the present day, showing how a man who considers himself irresistible fails to recognize the signs of the times. He ultimately collides with a modern code of conduct against abuse of power, discrimination and sexual assault. It’s a production with rhythm, wit, a lot of drama and an abundance of big emotional moments.
For Mozart’s Figaro, which counts as one of the most inspiring and profound works in opera, one needs a spirited conductor and a playful ensemble of singers. This season’s cast offers both: Italian conductor Antonella Manacorda is at the helm of the Philharmonia Zürich. Led by the German soprano Nikola Hillebrand as Susanna and our ensemble member Andrew Moore as Figaro, the cast of young but very experienced Mozart singers jump feet first into Mozart’s comic madness.

Er kann es einfach nicht lassen: Eigentlich hat Graf Almaviva das ius primae noctis, das Recht der ersten Nacht, abgeschafft und trotzdem stellt er seiner Bediensteten Susanna nach, obwohl diese kurz vor der Hochzeit mit ihrem Figaro steht. Ein klarer Fall von sexueller Belästigung, den Susanna, die Gräfin und die Angestellten des Hauses nicht länger dulden. Der deutsche Regisseur Jan Philipp Gloger lässt Mozarts Meisterwerk in seiner ideensprühenden Zürcher Inszenierung in der Gegenwart spielen und zeigt, wie ein Mann, der sich für unwiderstehlich hält, die Zeichen der Zeit nicht erkennt und sich in den Fallstricken eines modernen Verhaltenskodexes gegen Machtmissbrauch, Diskriminierung und sexuelle Übergriffe verheddert. Das hat Tempo, Witz, Fallhöhe, und die grossen Gefühlsmomente kommen ebenfalls nicht zu kurz.
Für Mozarts Figaro, der zu den inspiriertesten und tiefgründigsten Werken der gesamten Opernliteratur gehört, braucht man einen temperamentvollen Dirigenten und ein spielfreudiges Ensemble. Beides bietet die Besetzung dieser Spielzeit: Am Pult der Philharmonia Zürich steht der Italiener Antonella Manacorda. Junge und doch sehr mozarterfahrene Sängerinnen und Sänger rund um die deutsche Sopranistin Nikola Hillebrand als Susanna und unser Ensemblemitglied Andrew Moore als Figaro stürzen sich in Mozarts Komödien-Wahnsinn.
