THE HAUNTED MANOR is not only the most perfect work of Moniuszko from a musical standpoint, but also stands at the forefront of all Polish opera creations of the 19th century. The excellent construction of ensemble scenes, subtle yet colorful instrumentation, remarkable melodic invention, and captivating atmosphere of Polishness are indisputable qualities of this work.
 
Moniuszko completed his fifth opera shortly after the collapse of the January Uprising, so it's no wonder that it soon gained the reputation of a great patriotic manifestation. Shortly after the premiere, "The Haunted Manor" encountered censorship. The Russian authorities, fearing unrest, removed it from the playbill after three performances. This serves as evidence of how external circumstances can influence the fate of an opera - for although one can discern influences from the masterpieces of Fredro and Mickiewicz in the character portrayals, the whole is nothing more than a joyous, at times mocking, affirmation of provincial Polishness in the spirit of bel canto. Elements of folklore, numerous patriotic themes, and the atmosphere of a nobleman's manor make this work today recognized as the Polish national opera.

STRASZNY DWÓR to nie tylko najdoskonalsze, od strony muzycznej, dzieło Moniuszki, ale także wysuwające się na czoło całej polskiej twórczości operowej XIX wieku. Świetna konstrukcja scen zespołowych, subtelna i zarazem barwna instrumentalizacja, niezwykła inwencja melodyczna i urzekająca atmosfera polskości to niepodważalne walory tego utworu.

Moniuszko ukończył swą piątą operę wkrótce po upadku powstania styczniowego, trudno więc się dziwić, że wkrótce przylgnęło do niej miano wielkiej manifestacji patriotycznej. Tuż po premierze  STRASZNY DWÓR trafił na mur cenzury. Władze rosyjskie, obawiając się zamieszek, zdjęły go z afisza po trzech przedstawieniach. Oto dowód, jak na los opery mogą wpłynąć okoliczności zewnętrzne – bo choć w samym rysunku postaci można dopatrzyć się wpływu arcydzieł Fredry i Mickiewicza, całość jest niczym więcej, jak radosną, chwilami kpiącą, utrzymaną w duchu belcanta afirmacją zaściankowej polskości. Elementy folkloru, liczne wątki patriotyczne oraz atmosfera szlacheckiego dworu sprawiają, że dziś utwór ten uznaje się za polską operę narodową.
