Mozart compose la quasi totalità della propria musica sacra per i servizi liturgici della corte arcivescovile di Salisburgo. Le tredici Messe nate a Salisburgo, in un periodo compreso tra il 1769 e il 1780, non furono pensate dall’autore seguendo la traccia dettata dalla propria libera fantasia, ma nel rispetto dei precisi canoni imposti dal gusto corrente dell’epoca, dalla tradizione locale e dalle predilezioni dell’arcivescovo in carica.

Il trasferimento del 1781 a Vienna comportò per il compositore, con l’emancipazione da cortigiano a libero professionista, anche l’interruzione dei rapporti “obbligati” con la liturgia cattolica. Non è un caso che siano appena due i grandi lavori sacri degli anni viennesi – la Messa in do minore K. 427/417a e il Requiem K. 626, composti rispettivamente per iniziativa propria e dietro commissione privata, rimasti entrambi incompiuti per motivi diversi . Inoltre queste opere, per le imponenti dimensioni e per l’influenza del severo stile contrappuntistico di Bach e Hàndel (con le cui composizioni Mozart era venuto a contatto dal 1782) rappresentano una svolta rispetto alla concisione e alla cordialità delle messe del periodo salisburghese.

Le circostanze della nascita del Requiem sono avvolte nella leggenda. O, per meglio dire, sono state avvolte nella leggenda dalle innumerevoli fantasticherie inventate nel periodo romantico legate, ovviamente, all’aura del tutto particolare che attribuisce a questa partitura mortuaria il fatto di essere rimasta incompiuta in seguito alla morte dell’autore. La vedova Constanze, in difficili condizioni economiche, decise di far ultimare la partitura in modo da consegnarla al committente e ricevere il giusto compenso; senza beninteso rivelare l’apporto di mani diverse da quelle del marito.

La situazione complessiva, pazientemente ricostruita dalla ricerca musicologica, si presenta come segue. Dei dodici numeri musicali solo il primo (Introitus e Kyrie) è interamente autografo di Mozart, mentre i numeri 2-9 recano di pugno del maestro solamente la linea del basso, quelle delle voci e qualche più o meno cospicua indicazione di strumentazione (il n. 7, Lacrimosa, è poi drammaticamente interrotto). Gli ultimi tre numeri invece furono composti ex novo da Süssmayr (forse anche sulla base di indicazioni o appunti di Mozart) che, per il conclusivo Lux aeterna, riprese il brano iniziale.

Basterebbe ascoltare l’Introitus e Kyrie, unica sezione del tutto autografa. C’è innanzitutto una atmosfera sonora, livida e desolata, attribuibile in gran parte alla particolarissima strumentazione, dove gli unici legni presenti sono corni di bassetto (della famiglia dei clarinetti) e fagotti; di qui un timbro opaco e spettrale, che intreccia polifonie opponendosi ai pizzicati degli archi. Si staglia come contrasto il purissimo a solo di soprano «Te decet Hymnus». Segue poi la doppia fuga del Kyrie, serratissima e stringata, di carattere arcaico.

La sequenza si divide in sei sezioni, fra loro plasticamente contrapposte in quanto a scelte di organico e contenuto espressivo; il Dies irae, interamente corale, è di impatto massiccio; sintetico, drammatico, ricco di effetti figurati («tremor»). Il Tuba mirum vede alternarsi i quattro solisti (basso, tenore, contralto e soprano), che si uniscono solo al termine; ma l’effetto folgorante è quello iniziale del trombone solista, che dialoga con il basso. Il Rex tremendae majestatis reca nettissima l’impronta di Händel, nell’alternanza (e poi sovrapposizione) dei ritmi puntati degli archi e della massa corale. Il Recordare, nuovamente affidato ai solisti e costruito secondo lo schema ABA’CA”, è innervato da imitazioni di carattere arcaico, cui conferiscono fascino peculiare le scelte timbriche (l’introduzione strumentale è tutta di mano di Mozart). Il Confutatis contrappone coro maschile e femminile nelle immagini dei dannati e dei redenti. Le otto battute superstiti del Lacrimosa si interrompono al vertice del crescendo: la conclusione funzionale di Süssmayr non compromette l’incanto sofferto della pagina.

L’Offertorio si articola, come di consueto, in due parti, entrambe concluse dalla fuga «Quam olim Abrahae». Il Domine Jesu Christe ha una condotta corale incalzante e agitata, di derivazione mottettistica; l’episodio «Sed signifer sanctus Michael» passa ai solisti, e scivola direttamente nella fuga; nettamente contrastante lo squarcio sereno dell’Hostias, dove la scrittura corale omofonica è accompagnata dal fraseggio in sincopi degli archi.

Impossibile stabilire gli eventuali spunti di Mozart nei rimanenti pezzi, pervenuti interamente nella grafia dell’allievo. L’incedere solenne e corale del Sanctus è nel solco della tradizione, la fuga dell’«Hosanna» scolastica e sommaria. Il Benedictus, affidato ai solisti e perciò intimistico, è singolarmente esteso e rifinito. L’Agnus Dei si basa sul contrasto fra la triplice invocazione e la supplica «dona nobis pacem». Quanto al Lux aeterna, Süssmayr si limitò a riprendere la musica dell’Introitus e Kyrie; una soluzione che può apparire semplicistica, ma che alcuni commentatori hanno fatto risalire alla volontà dello stesso Mozart, orientato anche in altri lavori religiosi a rispettare quella logica circolare, così propria dell’epoca, intesa a ribadire principi eterni. Ma anche questa osservazione è destinata a rimanere nel campo delle ipotesi e degli interrogativi che da sempre si sono sollevati intorno all’ultimo capolavoro di Mozart.

Mozart composed almost all of his sacred music for the liturgical services of the archbishop's court in Salzburg. The thirteen Masses born in Salzburg, in a period between 1769 and 1780, were not conceived by the author following the path dictated by his own free imagination, but in compliance with the precise canons imposed by the current taste of the time, by the local tradition and by the predilections of the archbishop in office.

The 1781 move to Vienna meant for the composer, with the emancipation from courtier to freelancer, also the interruption of the "obligatory" relationship with the Catholic liturgy. It is no coincidence that there were just two great sacred works of the Viennese years – the Mass in C minor K. 427/417a and the Requiem K. 626, composed respectively on his own initiative and on private commission, both left unfinished for different reasons. Furthermore, these works, due to their imposing dimensions and the influence of the severe contrapuntal style of Bach and Handel (with whose compositions Mozart had come into contact since 1782) represent a turning point compared to the conciseness and cordiality of the masses of the Salzburg period.

The circumstances of the birth of the Requiem are shrouded in legend. Or, better said, they have been wrapped in legend by the innumerable fantasies invented in the romantic period obviously linked to the very particular aura which attributes to this mortuary score the fact of having remained unfinished following the author's death. The widow Constanze, in difficult economic conditions, decided to have the score completed in order to deliver it to the client and receive the right compensation; without of course revealing the contribution of hands other than those of the husband.

The overall situation, patiently reconstructed by musicological research, appears as follows. Of the twelve musical numbers, only the first ( Introitus and Kyrie ) is entirely autographed by Mozart, while numbers 2-9 bear the master's hand only the bass line, those of the voices and some more or less conspicuous indications of instrumentation (the no. 7, Lacrimosa , is then dramatically interrupted). The last three numbers, on the other hand, were composed ex novo by Süssmayr (perhaps also on the basis of Mozart's indications or notes) who, for the concluding Lux aeterna , resumed the initial piece.

It would be enough to listen to the Introitus and Kyrie , the only completely autographed section. First of all, there is a livid and desolate sonorous atmosphere, largely attributable to the very particular instrumentation, where the only woods present are basset horns (from the clarinet family) and bassoons; hence an opaque and spectral timbre, which intertwines polyphonies opposing the pizzicato of the strings. The pure soprano solo «Te decet Hymnus» stands out as a contrast. Then follows the double fugue of the Kyrie , very tight and concise, of an archaic nature.

The sequence is divided into six sections, plastically opposed to each other in terms of choices of organic and expressive content; the Dies irae , entirely choral, has a massive impact; synthetic, dramatic, full of figurative effects («tremor»). The Tuba mirum sees the four soloists alternate (bass, tenor, contralto and soprano), who join only at the end; but the dazzling effect is the initial one of the solo trombone, which dialogues with the bass. The Rex tremendae majestatis clearly bears Handel's imprint, in the alternation (and then superimposition) of the dotted rhythms of the strings and the choral mass. The recorder, again entrusted to the soloists and built according to the ABA'CA scheme”, is innervated by imitations of an archaic nature, to which the tonal choices give a peculiar charm (the instrumental introduction is entirely by Mozart's hand). The Confutatis contrasts male and female chorus in the images of the damned and the redeemed. The eight surviving bars of the Lacrimosa are interrupted at the apex of the crescendo: Süssmayr's functional conclusion does not compromise the suffered enchantment of the page.

The Offertory is divided, as usual, into two parts, both concluded by the fugue «Quam olim Abrahae». The Domine Jesu Christe has a pressing and agitated choral conduct, of motet derivation; the episode "Sed signifer sanctus Michael" switches to soloists, and slips directly into the fugue; the serene glimpse of the Hostias is clearly contrasting , where the homophonic choral writing is accompanied by the syncopated phrasing of the strings.

Impossible to establish any hints of Mozart in the remaining pieces, received entirely in the student's handwriting. The solemn and choral gait of the Sanctus is in the wake of tradition, the fugue of the scholastic and summary «Hosanna». The Benedictus , entrusted to the soloists and therefore intimate, is singularly extended and refined. The Agnus Dei is based on the contrast between the triple invocation and the supplication «dona nobis pacem». As for the Lux aeterna , Süssmayr limited himself to repeating the music of the Introitus and Kyrie; a solution that may appear simplistic, but which some commentators have traced back to the will of Mozart himself, also oriented in other religious works to respect that circular logic, so typical of the time, intended to reaffirm eternal principles. But even this observation is destined to remain in the field of hypotheses and questions that have always arisen around Mozart's latest masterpiece.
