Der englische König Richard Löwenherz und seine ihm noch nicht vorgestellte Verlobte Costanza stranden nach einem Sturm mit verschiedenen Schiffen auf Zypern. Der dortige Machthaber König Isacio verliebt sich auf Anhieb in Costanza, lässt diese festsetzen und versucht, seine eigene Tochter als Verlobte des Königs auszugeben. Eine spannende Geschichte voller grosser Emotionen nimmt ihren Lauf …


Nach den gefeierten Gastspielen mit Händels «Serse» und «Rinaldo» präsentieren Wolfgang Katschner und seine LAUTTEN COMPAGNEY BERLIN nun eine weitere spektakuläre Opernproduktion: Auf dem Programm steht eine ganz besondere Rarität der Operngeschichte: Händels «Riccardo Primo, Re d’Inghilterra» aus dem Jahr 1727. Mit dem Titelhelden, Richard Löwenherz, steht eine der schillerndsten Gestalten des Mittelalters im Mittelpunkt des Werks, welches mit etlichen wundervollen Barockarien aufwartet. Bei der Uraufführung sangen die Primadonnen Francesca Cuzzoni und Faustina Bordoni sowie der Kastrat Senesino in der Titelpartie. Dank der drei gleichwertigen Hauptpartien wird diese Oper gerne als Händels ausgewogenstes Werk angesehen.

The English King Richard the Lionheart and his fiancée Costanza, who has not yet been introduced to him, are stranded on Cyprus with various ships after a storm. The ruler there, King Isacio, immediately falls in love with Costanza, has her arrested and tries to pass off his own daughter as the king's fiancée. After the celebrated guest appearances with Handel's "Serse" and "Rinaldo", Wolfgang Katschner and his LAUTTEN COMPAGNEY BERLIN are now presenting another spectacular opera production: The program includes a very special rarity in opera history: Handel's "Riccardo Primo, Re d'Inghilterra" from the Year 1727. With the title hero, Richard the Lionheart, one of the most dazzling figures of the Middle Ages is the focus of the work, which features a number of wonderful baroque arias. At the premiere, the prima donnas Francesca Cuzzoni and Faustina Bordoni as well as the castrato Senesino sang in the title role. Thanks to the three equally important main parts, this opera is often regarded as Handel's most balanced work.
