The Duke of Mantua loves pleasure and women. He has a cynical henchman in his court jester Rigoletto, because nothing and nobody is sacred to the hunchback – except Gilda, his only child. To protect her from his master's snares, he keeps her hidden from the world. But the curse of the Count of Monterone, whose daughter was dishonored by the Duke, falls on Rigoletto and a brutal fate takes its course...

»Rigoletto«, one of the most touching and, at the same time, most horrific works in operatic literature, established Giuseppe Verdi's world fame as the absolute ruler of Italian opera. He himself believed that he would never be able to create anything so beautiful again. Composed on the basis of Victor Hugo's atmospheric drama »Le roi s'amuse«, the opera combines all the elements that opera audiences loved around 1851 and that still inspire today: a cynical outsider figure in the midst of lust and violence, guilt and innocence. The Viennese theater director and director Herbert Föttinger devotes himself to the abysses of the characters and brings the ice-cold, brutal world around the duke, which increases Rigoletto's longing for family warmth, to the stage in a powerful and rich in contrast.
