Exactly fifty years ago, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, which has given the Lucerne Festival so many great moments, performed for the first time at the Festival on Lake Lucerne. This anniversary must be celebrated: In keeping with the summer theme of "Diversity", the guests from Amsterdam Haydn's oratorio  The Creation chosen, this resounding praise of the diversity of the world. With childlike joy in tone painting, Haydn not only depicts the sun, moon and stars, but also all kinds of creatures: the bassoon makes the dove coo, the nightingale trills to virtuoso arabesques on the flute. The lion roars with deep trills, the army of insects buzzes out to soft string tremolos, and the sheep graze in the pasture to gently swaying melodies. Philippe Herreweghe, the Belgian grand seigneur of historically informed performance practice, can be seen at the podium. He, too, is celebrating an anniversary in 2022, as he will be celebrating his 75th birthday in May. Haydn's music, whose intelligence and richness of sound he cannot praise enough, is an affair of the heart for him. And with the Concertgebouw Orchestra he has the right orchestra at his side.

Vor genau fünfzig Jahren trat das Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, das Lucerne Festival schon so viele Sternstunden geschenkt hat, erstmals bei den Festspielen am Vierwaldstättersee auf. Dieses Jubiläum muss gefeiert werden: Passend zum Sommerthema «Diversity» haben sich die Gäste aus Amsterdam Haydns Oratorium Die Schöpfung ausgesucht, diesen tönenden Lobpreis auf die Vielfalt der Welt. Mit kindlicher Freude an der Tonmalerei zeichnet Haydn darin nicht nur Sonne, Mond und Sterne, sondern auch allerlei Getier nach: Das Fagott lässt die Taube gurren, die Nachtigall tiriliert zu virtuosen Arabesken der Flöte. Mit tiefen Trillern brüllt der Löwe, zu leisen Streichertremoli schwirrt das Heer der Insekten aus, zu sanft wiegenden Melodien grasen die Schafe auf der Weide. Am Pult ist Philippe Herreweghe zu erleben, der belgische Grandseigneur der historisch informierten Aufführungspraxis. Auch er ist ein Jubilar des Jahres 2022, feiert er doch im Mai seinen 75. Geburtstag. Haydns Musik, deren Intelligenz und Klangreichtum er nicht genug rühmen kann, ist ihm eine Herzensangelegenheit. Und mit dem Concertgebouw Orchestra steht ihm dafür das richtige Orchester zur Seite.
