In seiner Jugend trat der Wiener Pianist Rudolf Buchbinder oft in Jazzkneipen auf, und er zehrt bis heute von dieser Erfahrung – gerade wenn er Mozart spielt. Ohne Swing gehe da gar nichts, sagt er. Auch der Dirigent Jaap van Zweden begann einst anderswo, nämlich als Geiger am Konzertmeisterpult des Concertgebouw Orchestra. Dass er auch als Dirigent seine Interpretationen stets aus dem Orchester heraus entwickelt, macht einen Grossteil seines Erfolgs (und seiner Beliebtheit bei den Musiker*innen) aus. Da passt es, dass er mit Bartóks «Konzert für Orchester» auch ein Werk mitbringt, das keinen einzelnen Solisten braucht, sondern ganz viele.

In his youth, Viennese pianist Rudolf Buchbinder often performed in jazz bars, and he still draws on this experience today – especially when he plays Mozart. Nothing works without swing, he says. Conductor Jaap van Zweden also began elsewhere, as a violinist on the concertmaster's podium of the Concertgebouw Orchestra. The fact that as a conductor he always develops his interpretations from within the orchestra is one of the main reasons for his success (and his popularity with the musicians). It is therefore fitting that with Bartók's "Concerto for Orchestra" he also brings a work that does not need a single soloist, but rather many.
