Edvard Grieg was only 25 years old when his sole piano concerto was premiered: a work that, to this day, remains a crucial element in his lasting popularity. Full of haunting melodies and the fresh virtuosity of youth, but nevertheless entirely dedicated to the higher purpose of creating atmospheric moods and sounds, it can in many ways be seen as a series of tone poems for piano and orchestra. Here it is interpreted by this year's Artist in Residence for the Wiener Symphoniker, Jean-Yves Thibaudet. CHANGE: Emmanuel Krivine had to cancel his participation at this concert. Conductor Mikko Franck takes over the unchanged programme. Due to tragic family bereavement pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet had to cancel his upcoming concerts with the Wiener Symphoniker. Instead of Mr. Thibaudet pianist Alice Sara Ott will perform Grieg’s Piano Concerto; the rest of the programme remains also unchanged. Unfortunately Mikko Franck won't be able to conduct tonight's performance at the Wiener Konzerthaus for health reasons. We are extremely grateful that Yutaka Sado, Music Director of the Tonkünstler-Orchestra, has been able to take over the baton on such short notice. The programme will remain almost the same: In addition to Edvard Grieg's Piano Concerto, Rimski-Korsakow's symphonic suite "Scheherazade" will be performed as planned. The piece "Apotheosis" by the Finnish composer Einojuhani Rautavaara has been cancelled. Tickets will retain their validity. We thank you for your understanding.
