Dans la Manon Lescaut d’Auber, sur un livret d’Eugène Scribe d’après le roman de Prévost, la mort tragique de l’héroïne annonce celle de Carmen. Au programme également, les mélodies de Canteloube correspondent idéalement à la voix de Marianne Crebassa. Sorte de folklore imaginaire romantique et suave, ces airs inspirés des chants ruraux sont chantés en occitan. Quant aux oeuvres de Ravel, elles nous entraînent sur les rives de la Méditerranée.

Joseph Canteloube s’est passionné pour les chants traditionnels en langue d’Oc du centre de la France, les amours des bergères, la garde du troupeau ou encore les sources…. Il en a fait une œuvre magnifique pour orchestre et soprano, les Chants d’Auvergne, dont les mélodies alternent humour et humeur joyeuse ou mélancolique. Aucun désir d’être proche du folklore authentique dans ce recueil composé entre 1923 et 1930 : plutôt une sorte de « folklore imaginaire » romantique et suave, avec des mélodies inspirées lointainement des chants ruraux d’Auvergne et du Quercy, chantés en occitan. Toutes les grandes cantatrices ont interprété ces mélodies charmantes : Victoria de Los Angeles, Kiri Te Kanawa, Dawn Upshaw, Véronique Gens, Frederica von Stade, Maria Bayo…

In Auber's Manon Lescaut , with a libretto by Eugène Scribe based on the novel by Prévost, the tragic death of the heroine announces that of Carmen. A sort of romantic and suave imaginary folklore, these tunes inspired by rural songs are sung in Occitan. As for Ravel's works, they take us to the shores of the Mediterranean.

Joseph Canteloube was passionate about traditional songs in the Langue d'Oc from central France, the loves of shepherdesses, guarding the flock and even springs.... He created a magnificent work for orchestra and soprano, the Chants d'Auvergne , whose melodies alternate between humor and joyful or melancholy mood. No desire to be close to authentic folklore in this collection composed between 1923 and 1930: rather a sort of romantic and suave “imaginary folklore”, with melodies distantly inspired by the rural songs of Auvergne and Quercy, sung in Occitan. All the great singers have performed these charming melodies: Victoria de Los Angeles, Kiri Te Kanawa, Dawn Upshaw, Véronique Gens, Frederica von Stade, Maria Bayo…
