For the 1856/57 season, Verdi was commissioned by the Teatro la Fenice in Venice to write a new opera and, like four years earlier with the "Trovatore", chose a drama by the Spanish poet Antonio García Gutiérrez (1813-1884) as the basis. In preparation, he studied Schiller's "Fiesco's Conspiracy at Genoa" and wrote a prose libretto that Francesco Maria Piave translated into opera verses. It was not until 1930 that the German premiere of this "secret tip" among Verdi's operas took place. The work fascinates with the skilful musical description of the atmosphere between love and power; Gripping drama, enchantingly beautiful melodies and haunting orchestral colors characterize this unconventional late work, which did not achieve world fame through individual bravura arias. "Friends and foes alike say what they will: the 'Boccanegra' is no less worthy than many of my more fortunate operas! Only it may call for a fuller rendition and an audience willing to listen" ( Verdi to his publisher Tito Ricordi, February 4, 1859). Genoa in the 14th century. The corsair Simon Boccanegra is elected doge and now hopes to be able to marry the patrician Fiesco's daughter. But he finds his beloved dead. 25 years later, Boccanegra sees his daughter Maria, who lives under the name Amelia Grimaldi, for the first time. Political and private intrigues against Boccanegra take their course...
