For the 1856/57 season, Verdi was commissioned by the Teatro la Fenice in Venice to write a new opera and, like four years earlier with the "Trovatore", chose a drama by the Spanish poet Antonio García Gutiérrez (1813-1884) as the basis. In preparation, he studied Schiller's "Fiesco's Conspiracy at Genoa" and wrote a prose libretto that Francesco Maria Piave translated into opera verses.
