Der chinesisch-amerikanische Komponist Tan Dun ist vor allem für seine Filmmusik weltberühmt. Sein Schlagzeugkonzert "The Tears of Nature" führt uns zu einem Kernelement der Natur: das Wasser. In Verbindung mit einem früheren Werk erklärt der Komponist, dass für ihn das Wasser den "Tears of Nature" (Tränen der Natur) gleiche. Das Werk gehört zu Tan Duns Reihe der "Organic Music", in denen der Solist nicht nur klassische Musikinstrumente wie Pauken, Marimba, Trommeln oder Glockenspiel, sondern auch viele Naturmaterialien zur Klangerzeugung nutzt.
Im Kompositionsprojekt Sound LAB werden sich drei Schulklassen mit Naturklängen wie Steingeklapper, Wassertropfen und Laubrascheln auseinandersetzen - sowie mit dem großen Bestand des modernen Schlagwerkers. Nach zehn Wochen Projektunterricht werden die Ergebnisse der Kompositionsarbeiten der drei beteiligten Schulklassen in der Philharmonie Essen präsentiert.

Lesley Olson, Künstlerische Leitung
Lesley Olson, geboren in Chicago/USA, studierte Querflöte und Komposition an der University of Illinois. Weitere Impulse in Bezug auf moderne Musik und Improvisation bekam sie bei Kursen mit Robert Dick, Heinz Holliger und Jon Rose. Als Flötistin ist Olson in den Europa, den USA, Japan und Südamerika aufgetreten. Seit 2011 lehrt sie Improvisation im Instrumentalunterricht und in Projektarbeit an der Essener Folkwang Universität der Künste. Seit 1996 führt sie Kompositionsprojekte in weiterführenden Schulen auf. Seit 2010 arbeitet sie an der Philharmonie Essen im Bereich Konzertpädagogik, in dem sie Schulklassen in das Konzertleben mit klassischer bis zeitgenössischer Musik einführt.

The Chinese-American composer Tan Dun is world famous for his film music. His percussion concerto "The Tears of Nature" takes us to a core element of nature: water. In connection with an earlier work, the composer explains that for him the water resembles the "Tears of Nature". The work belongs to Tan Dun's "Organic Music" series, in which the soloist uses not only classical musical instruments such as timpani, marimba, drums or glockenspiel, but also many natural materials to produce sound.
In the composition project Sound LAB, three school classes will deal with natural sounds such as the clatter of stones, water drops and the rustling of leaves - as well as with the large stock of modern percussionists. After ten weeks of project instruction, the results of the composition work of the three school classes involved will be presented in the Philharmonie Essen.

Lesley Olson, Artistic Director
Lesley Olson, born in Chicago/USA, studied flute and composition at the University of Illinois. She received further impulses in relation to modern music and improvisation from courses with Robert Dick, Heinz Holliger and Jon Rose. As a flutist, Olson has performed in Europe, the USA, Japan and South America. Since 2011 she has been teaching improvisation in instrumental lessons and in project work at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen. Since 1996 she has been performing composition projects in secondary schools. Since 2010 she has been working at the Philharmonie Essen in the field of concert pedagogy, where she introduces school classes to concert life with classical to contemporary music.
