The concert in the ancient Basilica of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Old Brno will feature minor sacred compositions by the late Renaissance composer active in Olomouc, Kroměříž, Brno and Prague, Jacob Handel-Gall (1550–1591), the slightly younger Czech nobleman Kryštof Harant of Polžice and Bezdružice (1564–1621) and Leoš Janáček (1854–1928), who served as choir director in the basilica, as well as two large-scale works by composers of the 20th century; Pavel Haas (1899–1944) and Bohuslav Martinů (1890–1959). 

Psalm 29 for Organ, Baritone, Female Choir and Small Orchestra by Pavel Haas was composed in 1931–32. The composer was inspired by a holiday trip to Germany in 1931 where, among other things, he visited Beethoven’s birthplace in Bonn and the cathedral in Cologne, as he informed Zdenka Janáček in a postcard he sent her. It was this spiritual experience that led Haas to compose Psalm 29. The sketches for the work with the sound reference to the bells of Cologne Cathedral were already formed on during the trip. A year later he completed the composition to the text of the Psalm in the Czech translation from the 16th century Bible of Kralice. The work was conceived for organ, baritone, female choir and small orchestra and premiered in Brno in 1933 under the baton of Haas’ classmate Břetislav Bakala.

Just seven years later, shortly after the outbreak of WWII, Bohuslav Martinů’s Field Mass saw the light of day. The composer created it very spontaneously in November and December 1939 in Paris, with anguished memories of his country. He wrote his anti-war musical protest to the words of the writer Jiří Mucha. He conceived the score for baritone solo, male choir, wind music, percussion division, harmonium and piano. This extremely impressive work was premiered after the war in 1946 in Prague under the baton of Rafael Kubelík.

Das Konzert in der Alt-Brünner Basilika Mariä Himmelfahrt präsentiert neben kleinen geistlichen Werken des während der Spätrenaissance in Olmütz, Kroměříž, Brünn und Prag wirkenden Komponisten Jacobus Handl-Gallus (1550–1591), des nur wenig jüngeren böhmischen Adligen Christoph Harant von Polschitz und Weseritz (1564–1621) sowie von Leoš Janáček (1854–1928), der in der Basilika die Funktion des Chorleiters innehatte, auch zwei umfangreiche Kompositionen von Autoren des 20. Jahrhunderts – Pavel Haas (1899–1944) und Bohuslav Martinů (1890–1959).

Der Psalm 29 für Orgel, Bariton, Frauenchor und kleines Orchester von Pavel Haas entstand in den Jahren 1931–1932. Seine Inspiration hatte er 1931 bei einer Urlaubsreise nach Deutschland gefunden, als er unter anderem Beethovens Geburtshaus in Bonn und den Kölner Dom besuchte, wie er Zdenka Janáčková auf einer Postkarte berichtete. Gerade dieses spirituelle Erlebnis führte Haas zur Komposition des Psalms 29. Skizzen zu diesem Werk samt einem Verweis auf den Klang der Kölner Domglocken entstanden bereits direkt auf der Reise. Ein Jahr später vollendete Haas das Werk, welches auf dem Psalmtext in der tschechischen Übersetzung aus der Kralitzer Bibel des 16. Jahrhunderts basiert. Das Stück für Orgel, Bariton, Frauenchor und kleines Orchester erlebte seine Premiere im Jahr 1933 in Brno, am Dirigentenpult stand Haas’ Studienkollege Břetislav Bakala.

Nur sieben Jahre später, kurz nach Ausbruch des Zweiten Weltkriegs, erblickte die Feldmesse von Bohuslav Martinů das Licht der Welt. Der Komponist schrieb sie sehr spontan im November und Dezember 1939 in Paris, in banger Erinnerung an das besetzte Heimatland. Sein musikalischer Protest gegen den Krieg basiert auf Worten des Schriftstellers Jiří Mucha. Die Partitur konzipierte er für Baritonsolo, Männerchor, Bläser, eine Division von Perkussionsinstrumenten, Harmonium und Klavier. Das ungemein effektvolle Werk erlebte seine Premiere erst nach Ende des Krieges, als es 1946 in Prag von Rafael Kubelík dirigiert wurde.

Na koncertě ve starobylé bazilice Nanebevzetí Panny Marie na Starém Brně zazní vedle drobných duchovních skladeb pozdně renesančního skladatele působícího v Olomouci, Kroměříži, Brně a Praze Jacoba Handla-Galla (1550–1591), jen o málo mladšího českého šlechtice Kryštofa Haranta z Polžic a Bezdružic (1564–1621) a Leoše Janáčka (1854–1928), který v bazilice zastával funkci ředitele kůru, také dvě rozsáhlá díla skladatelů 20. století; Pavla Haase (1899–1944) a Bohuslava Martinů (1890–1959). 

Žalm 29 pro varhany, baryton, ženský sbor a malý orchestr Pavla Haase vznikl v letech 1931–32. Skladatel se inspiroval prázdninovou cestou do Německa v roce 1931, kde mimo jiné navštívil Beethovenův rodný dům v Bonnu a katedrálu v Kolíně nad Rýnem, jak o tom v zaslané pohlednici informoval Zdenku Janáčkovou. Právě tento duchovní zážitek vedl Haase ke kompozici Žalmu 29. Skici k tomuto dílu se zvukovým odkazem na zvony kolínské katedrály pocházejí již ze samotné cesty. Skladbu dokončil o rok později na text Žalmu ve znění českého překladu z Bible kralické ze 16. století. Skladbu koncipoval pro varhany, baryton, ženský sbor a malý orchestr a premiéra díla zazněla v Brně v roce 1933 pod taktovkou Haasova spolužáka Břetislava Bakaly.

Jen o sedm let později, krátce po vypuknutí druhé světové války, spatřila světlo světa Polní mše Bohuslava Martinů. Skladatel ji vytvořil velmi spontánně v listopadu a prosinci 1939 v Paříži, s úzkostnou vzpomínkou na porobenou vlast. Svůj protiválečný hudební protest napsal na slova spisovatele Jiřího Muchy. Partituru koncipoval pro barytonové sólo, mužský sbor, dechovou hudbu, divizi bicích nástrojů, harmonium a klavír. Nesmírně působivé dílo mělo premiéru až po válce v roce 1946 v Praze pod taktovkou Rafaela Kubelíka.
