The most famous Polish opera, or at least the most famous in the oeuvre of Stanisław Moniuszko. The author of the libretto is Jan Chęciński. It is divided into four acts. It took Moniuszko over 3 years to compose it (1861-1864).
In "The Haunted Manor", both romantic, patriotic and comedy threads are intertwined. The heroes of the opera are two brothers, Stefan and Zbigniew, returning from the war. They vow perpetual cavalry to be always ready to "give blood for the motherland." Stryjenka has different plans for them, as she has planned games for her nephews. A visit to the title estate of Miecznik, a friend of the brothers' father, however, turns the whole situation on its head.
There are many references to the Sarmatian tradition in the opera. Moniuszko wove old Polish rituals, costumes, songs and dances into the action, incl. fiery Masuria for the final.

Najbardziej znana polska opera, a przynajmniej najsłynniejsza w dorobku Stanisława Moniuszki. Autorem libretta jest Jan Chęciński. Rozpisana została na cztery akty. Jej komponowanie zajęło Moniuszce ponad 3 lata (1861 – 1864).
W „Strasznym dworze” przeplatają się wątki zarówno romantyczne i patriotyczne, jak i komediowe. Bohaterami opery są dwaj bracia Stefan i Zbigniew powracający z wojaczki. Ślubują wieczne kawalerstwo, by zawsze być gotowym „oddać krew za ojczyznę”. Odmienne plany ma wobec nich Stryjenka, mająca upatrzone partie dla bratanków. Wizyta w tytułowym majątku Miecznika, przyjaciela ojca braci, stawia jednak całą sytuację „na głowie”.
W operze nie brak odniesień do sarmackiej tradycji. Moniuszko wplótł w akcję staropolskie obrzędy, stroje, pieśni i tańce, m.in. ognisty Mazur na finał.
