The National Symphony Orchestra Summer Music Institute Orchestra presents two concerts as part of its four-week festival. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the program and features musicians ages 15–20 from 20 states and 3 countries.

The first concert features Gabriela Lena Frank’s Mestizo Waltz from Three Latin American Dances, Kennedy Center Composer-in-Residence Carlos Simon’s Tales: A Folklore Symphony, and Johannes Brahms’ Symphony No. 2.

The final concert of the 2023 NSO Summer Music Institute opens with the first movement of Errollyn Wallen’s Photography and continues with Edwin York Bowen's Viola Concerto No. 2 featuring the SMI concerto competition winner. The first half of the concert ends with William Grant Still’s Symphony No. 2, “Song of a New Race.” After intermission, the evening concludes with Maurice Ravel’s La Valse and Richard Strauss’ Der Rosenkavalier Suite.

The concerts are free and open to all. No advance reservations or tickets are required. Seating is first come, first served. The concerts are appropriate for all ages.
