Het Celloconcerto in e is het laatste grote werk van de Britse componist Edward Elgar. Hij schreef dit vierdelig concerto in 1919, net na de Eerste Wereldoorlog. De elegische en contemplatieve sfeer kan verbonden worden met de angst, wanhoop en desillusie van de oorlogsjaren. Het meanderende hoofdthema van de eerste beweging componeerde Elgar toen hij ontwaakte uit een verdoving na het laten weghalen van zijn amandelen. Hij beschouwde het als iets diep persoonlijks: “als je ooit iemand dit thema hoort fluiten in de heuvels van Malvern, dan ben ik dat.”

In 1915 was Jean Sibelius een gevestigd componist wiens 50ste verjaardag werd uitgeroepen tot een nationale feestdag in Finland. Toch twijfelde hij aan zichzelf: moest hij, rekening houdende met de recente modernistische verwezenlijkingen van Stravinsky, de Franse impressionisten en Schönberg zijn compositiestijl radicaal omgooien of zat er nog toekomst in zijn nationalistisch geïnspireerde, hoogromantische klankesthetica? In de Vijfde symfonie, koos hij er gaandeweg voor om trouw te blijven aan zichzelf. De derde versie van deze symfonie, gepubliceerd in 1919 is een driedelig werk. Unieke harmonieën en fenomenale orkestkleuren kenmerken de zich organisch ontwikkelende eerste beweging die na enkele donkere passages triomfantelijk wordt afgesloten met een scherzoachtig einddeel. Daarna komt een warmhartige, liefelijke tweede beweging: een reeks variaties op een thema dat de fluit introduceert. Inspiratie voor de derde en laatste beweging vond Sibelius in 16 zwanen die hij gracieus over een meer nabij zijn huis had zien vliegen. Beroemd is ook het einde, bestaande uit zes individuele akkoorden die de dirigent – in dit concert James Feddeck – elk afzonderlijk op bijzonder theatrale wijze kan laten losbarsten.

Le Concerto pour violoncelle en mi mineur est la dernière oeuvre majeure du compositeur britannique Edward Elgar. Celui-ci écrivit ce concerto en quatre mouvements en 1919, juste après la Première Guerre mondiale. L’atmosphère élégiaque et contemplative qui s’en dégage évoque les angoisses, le désespoir et les désillusions des années de guerre. Le thème principal sinueux du premier mouvement a été composé par Elgar au réveil de son anesthésie pour une ablation des amygdales. Il considérait ce thème comme quelque chose d’extrêmement personnel : « Si vous entendez un jour quelqu’un siffler ce thème dans les collines de Malvern, ce sera moi ».

En 1915, Jean Sibelius était déjà un compositeur bien établi. Le jour de son 50e anniversaire fut même proclamé jour férié en Finlande. À cette époque, Sibelius était pourtant en proie au doute : face aux créations modernistes récentes de Stravinsky, aux impressionnistes français et à Schoenberg, devait-il radicalement modifier son style ? Ou son esthétique musicale d’inspiration nationaliste, dans la droite ligne du romantisme tardif, avait-elle encore un avenir ? Au fil de la composition de sa Cinquième symphonie, il décide de rester fidèle à lui-même. La troisième version de cette symphonie, publiée en 1919, est une oeuvre en trois mouvements. Des harmonies uniques et des couleurs orchestrales phénoménales caractérisent le premier mouvement qui se déploie de manière organique et qui, après quelques passages sombres, s’achève de manière triomphale sur un finale en forme de scherzo. Le deuxième mouvement est chaleureux et charmant, avec une série de variations sur un thème introduit par la flûte. Le troisième et dernier mouvement lui a été inspiré par le vol gracieux de 16 cygnes au-dessus d’un lac près de chez lui. Le finale est lui aussi resté célèbre : il se compose de six accords que le chef d’orchestre James Feddeck fera éclater un à un de manière particulièrement théâtrale.

TRUE TO HIMSELF

The Cello Concerto in E minor is the last major work by the British composer Edward Elgar. He wrote this four-movement concerto in 1919, just after the First World War. Its elegiac and contemplative mood can be linked to the anxiety, despair and disillusionment of the war years. The sinuous main theme of the first movement was composed by Elgar while he was waking up from an anaesthetic after having his tonsils removed. He regarded it as something deeply personal: “if you ever hear someone whistling this theme in the Malvern Hills, it will be me”.

By 1915, Jean Sibelius was an established composer whose 50th birthday was declared a public holiday in Finland. Yet he had doubts about himself: in view of the recent modernist achievements of Stravinsky, the French Impressionists and Schönberg, did he have to radically change his compositional style or was there still a future in his nationalistic and highly romantic sound aesthetics? In the Fifth Symphony, he chose to remain true to himself. The third version of this symphony, published in 1919, is a work in three movements. Unique harmonies and phenomenal orchestral colours characterise the organically-developed first movement, which, after a few dark passages, concludes triumphantly with a scherzo-like final movement. This is followed by a warm and charming second movement: a series of variations on a theme introduced by the flute. Sibelius found inspiration for the third and final movement in 16 swans he had seen flying gracefully over a lake near his home. The ending is also famous: it consists of six individual chords, which the conductor - in this concerto James Feddeck - can unleash in a particularly theatrical manner.
