Faust: Szenen aus Goethes Faust

Faust is a disenchanted scholar, fruitlessly seeking the deepest truth. In exchange for his soul, the Devil promises him a life full of pleasure, culminating in one perfectly happy moment. This unlikely duo is driven by recognisable desires with a dark shadow: from tragic love to the blind drive for progress. In the end, redemption awaits, but the road there is a rollercoaster of striving, falling down and always struggling back up. Faust, that's us. Composer Robert Schumann browsed through Goethe's masterpiece and captured the essence in seven iconic scenes, alternating between opera and oratory. According to conductor Philippe Herreweghe, these Szenen aus Goethes Faust are simply made to be staged. Enter: film director Julian Rosefeldt and choreographer Femke Gyselinck. Together they capture the Faustian condition in image and movement. Under an imposing video screen, the stage is populated by a special community of singers, including soloists and Collegium Vocale Gent as well as the Opera Ballet Vlaanderen Chorus and Children's Chorus.

n ruil voor zijn ziel sluit Faust een pact met de duivel. We willen allemaal meer en beter, maar botsen onvermijdelijk op grenzen. Faust, dat zijn wij allemaal.

Faust is een ontgoochelde geleerde, vruchteloos op zoek naar de diepste waarheid. In ruil voor zijn ziel belooft de duivel hem een leven vol genot, culminerend in één volmaakt gelukkig moment. Dit onwaarschijnlijke duo wordt gedreven door herkenbare verlangens met een duistere schaduw: van tragische liefde tot blinde vooruitgangsdrift. Finaal wacht de verlossing, maar de weg daarheen is een rollercoaster van streven, vallen en steeds weer overeind krabbelen. Faust, dat zijn wij. Componist Robert Schumann bladerde door Goethes meesterwerk en vatte de essentie in zeven iconische scènes, laverend tussen opera en oratorium. Volgens dirigent Philippe Herreweghe smeken deze Szenen aus Goethes Faust om een enscenering. Enter: filmregisseur Julian Rosefeldt en choreograaf Femke Gyselinck. Samen vatten zij de faustiaanse conditie in beeld en beweging. Onder een overweldigend videoscherm wordt het toneel bevolkt door een bijzondere gemeenschap van zangers: zowel solisten als Collegium Vocale Gent en het Koor en Kinderkoor van Opera Ballet Vlaanderen.
