The English composer Thomas Tallis (1505-1585) lived during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, a cultural heyday of the English Renaissance. Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958) was interested in the music of the time as a young man. Tallis' theme, about which Vaughan Williams fantasized in 1910, is a setting of the psalm verse, which is rich in references for us, "Why do the peoples rage, why do the nations make futile plans?"
Benjamin Britten's (1913-1976) artistic curiosity was not only directed towards British culture, but also towards the European continent, especially France, from where the ten almost untranslatable poems by Arthur Rimbaud (1854-1891) come from, which he wrote in “Les Illuminations "is used. Rimbaud's poetry and Britten's setting are filled with the fascination of the cities, which is raised to a mystical and surreal level: “The Bacchantes from the suburbs sob and the moon burns and howls. Venus enters the caves of the blacksmiths and hermits. "
The fact that Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) wrote not only the “Eroica” in 1803, which was originally to be called “Sinfonia Bonaparte”, but also piano variations on the melody of the English royal anthem in the same year, shows that he had sympathy for both sides ( He also arranged a large number of Scottish songs) - one could say that his horizon was European.
With so many musical entanglements among Europeans and interest in one another, “Brexit” is also a deplorable process in terms of culture. Christian Zacharias, pianist, conductor and creator of our program, found the right orchestral work for its end: Haydn's 45th is not one of the twelve symphonies he composed for London, but it is a particularly expressive, dramatic and uniquely staged ending!
