According to the composer himself, music was primarily meant to give pleasure and provoke deep feelings, so he tried to compose, but also chose the content of his works. Thaïs is the story of a beautiful courtesan who almost hypnotizes her admirers with grace and beauty. Her dissolute life, however, is a salt in the eyes of the young monk, Atanael. He tries to convert the promiscuous woman at all costs, which is successful. As a result of this peculiar crusade, Atanael discovers that it was not really about conversion, but about winning the extraordinary and magical love of Thaïs. However, it is too late for this, because his chosen one is dying. Thaïs is a story about passions that torment people, but also about the dangers of excessive religious fascination.
