This Opening Concert pays tribute to the pioneers of Chinese musical modernism and the century-old heritage of music in Beijing. In 1922, the founding of the Peking University Music Training Institute assembled the most forward-thinking personalities of the time. If we have to find commonalities among them, their works stand at the nexus of Chinese and Western music, which in turn motivated a century’s steady progress of Chinese composition. The Music Training Institute was the first professional educational organization modeled after the West, a pioneer in China before the founding of the country’s music conservatories that nurtured a generation of noted educators. Xiao Youmei, who was among the Institute’s founders, later became the inaugural President of the National Conservatory of Music (precursor of the Shanghai Conservatory of Music). More than half a century later and among the new generation of composers, Qigang Chen wrote his cello concerto Reflet d’un temps disparu, a work inspired by and building upon the ancient tune Three Variations on Plum Blossom, also reflecting on memories and reverie. This work is a true exemplar of Chen’s unique compositional technique, deeply rooted in Chinese traditional culture and a solid training in music theory and contemporary composition,first at the Central Conservatory of Music and later in Paris under the tutelage of Olivier Messiaen. The work can trace spiritual lineage from China’s elder musical statemen.
Let us look back to the early 20th century. In 1927, Liu Tianhua, then 32 and dreaming to reform Chinese music, composed Improvement Exercise, a true amalgam of Western and Chinese elements. Grounded in both Chinese traditional music and the Western canon, he established a strong foundation for the modernization of Chinese traditional music. In this concert, contemporary composer Zou Ye offers Hearing Liu Tianhua, a concerto for orchestra combining the China Philharmonic Orchestra and Beijing Chinese Orchestra in equal footing, casting some of Liu’s iconic themes in an innovative structure that is new yet traces a strong heritage. Could this be a future that Liu (who died at the age of 37) had dreamt of? The program includes four songs by Xiao Youmei and Yuen Ren Chao, both key figures in the Peking University Music Training Institute and major contributors to China’s musical development. Homage to Liu Tianhua is a co-commission of the BMF and the Beijing
Chinese Orchestra. This world premiere performance will surely enrich the advocacy of Chinese musical esthetics that is one of the BMF’s key missions.

北京国际音乐节以这场音乐会致敬百年前中国现代音乐的先驱，致敬北京这座城市的音乐传承。 1922年成立的北京大学音乐传习所将当时最新锐的音乐头脑汇聚起来，如果说他们身上有什么共性，那就是他们最伟大的作品都产生于中国与西方音乐文化的交汇点上，这也成为了百年来推动中国音乐不断前进的音乐家们的共性。北京大学音乐传习所是我国最早按照西方模式成立的专业音乐教育机构，是我国音乐学院的先驱，培养了一批教育人才，参与创建北京大学音乐传习所的萧友梅先生后来还成为国立音乐院（上海音乐学院前身）的首任院长。半个多世纪以后的中国作曲家陈其钢写下了大提琴协奏曲《逝去的时光》，借中国古曲《梅花三弄》的泛音旋律构建起庞大的结构，又在对往昔依依不舍的追忆中让听众陷入长久的思索之中。作品充分展现了陈其钢独一无二的作曲技法，这种技法是他深厚的中国传统文化与传统音乐积淀。在中央音乐学院求学期间打下的坚实的作曲理论基础以及在法国求学期间师法梅西安所掌握的当代音乐风格的融合，更是在精神上继承了音乐传习所的先辈们。

让我们将目光投向 20世纪初，32岁的刘天华在1927年抱着改进国乐的伟大理想，用一曲《改进操》开启了将西方与中国音乐元素结合起来的实践道路，这位同时精通中国民族乐器与西方音乐的天才音乐家，为中国民乐在现代的发展奠定了坚实的基础。在这场音乐会上，作曲家邹野以一部《聆听刘天华》，将中国爱乐乐团与北京民族乐团合二为一，以乐队协奏曲的形式，采用了刘天华存世作品的精彩主题，通过重新结构， 以交响乐的原则及民间音乐的构成因素，创造的一个新的、继承性极强的音乐作品。东西方音乐在这部作品里不分彼此，水乳交融，这是否是37岁时就英年早逝的刘天华曾经幻想过的未来？音乐会同时还将上演萧友梅与赵元任的四首歌曲，两人都是北京大学音乐传习所的灵魂人物，在中国音乐发展史上功勋卓著，充分体现了从音乐传习所到北京国际音乐节之间跨越百年的传承。北京国际音乐节与北京民族乐团联合委约的新作《聆听刘天华》在本场音乐会世界首演，为北京国际音乐节舞台上的中国概念赋予更丰富的精神内涵。
