Stravinsky's Life of a Tramp is inspired by William Hogarth 's cycle of engravings of the same name . The authors of the libretto are Wystan Hugh Auden and Chester Kallman . The opera was created in America between 1948 and 1951, but had its world premiere at Venice's Teatro La Fenice on September 11, 1951, conducted by Stravinsky himself, who at the time had an all-star cast led by Elisabeth Schwarzkopf in the role of Anne Trulove. The main "hero" of the storyis Tom Rakewellis a frivolous idler. He dreams of a carefree life without work. He is engaged to the fair Anne Trulove, and if he wants to marry her he must find a proper job. But he's a slacker, which makes him an easy target for the devil incarnate, Nick Shadow. He tells him that he inherited a large fortune from his deceased uncle. Tom leaves for London, where he will indeed take over a large inheritance. He begins to debauchery and lead a wicked life. Anna decides to save Tom from the clutches of evil, she leaves for him in London, where in the meantime her bereaved fiance has married Baba Turkyná. Finally, when Tom's one-year term is up, he meets Nick in a graveyard, where he is offered a game of cards as a final game for his soul. Nick loses at cards, but he sends madness at Tom. Tom finds himself in an insane asylum, where he soon dies. The Life of a Prodigal is today one of the most successful operas of the twentieth century. It is a model work of musical neoclassicism, of which Igor Stravinsky was one of the main representatives. In a very special way, it follows the traditional form of Italian opera of the eighteenth century, but the musical component of the work does not deny its origin in the twentieth century. At the same time, the music is fully comprehensible and accessible.
