Concert Program: Saturday, March 30th, 4:00 PM, Spieker Center for the Arts

Join Music@Menlo and a stellar cast of six artists for two days of musical discovery, March 28 and 30. Curated by cellist Dmitri Atapine, Through the Composer’s Lens explores the deep connections between great composers past and present and the art of movie music. The first event (March 28) features an immersive discussion including live performance and multimedia; the second (March 30) is a concert program showcasing many of the musical pieces discussed.“All the composers have deep and different relationships with film,” says Dmitri. “There’s Shostakovich, the classical composer coerced into writing film music, which nevertheless was extraordinarily beautiful. And Rota, the film composer wishing to write ‘traditional’ classical. Larsen and Castillo, living composers inspired by the sounds, subjects, and ambiance of film. And, of course, Korngold, the original creator of ‘film sound,’ which was drawn on so often by composers like John Williams.”
