In Benjamin Britten's chamber opera "The Turn of the Screw" (premier: Friday, March 25, 2022 at 7:30 p.m.) light and shadow play a major role.

Britten's enigmatic and impressive chamber opera "The Turn of the Screw" reflects in its fragmented structure the apparently fragmentary and possibly distorted perceptions and memories of the protagonist. Each scene throws a different light on what is happening, which from the governess's memory perspective cannot be put together into a homogeneous whole, but rather appears like a puzzle with missing parts. Henry James, whose story, which was published in 1898 and was influenced by early depth psychological ideas, served as the template for Britten's opera, once described it with understatement as a "game of strange encounters".
