A young woman is supposed to go to the country estate of Bly as governess in order to take care of the education of the two orphans Flora and Miles. The client is the uncle, who is also the guardian of the orphans, who does not want to be bothered and who swears the young woman to maintain absolute secrecy about what is happening at his country estate. In fact, the behavior of the two children and the events in the house puzzle her. The housekeeper Mrs. Grose, who apparently has already spent half her life in Bly, doesn't seem entirely transparent to her either. Finally, the Governess thinks she sees the shadowy apparitions of a man and a woman walking through the rooms and recognizes in them the ghosts of former employees Peter Quint and Miss Jessel. Demonic powers seem to be rampant and haunting everyone involved. Britten's enigmatic and impressive chamber opera The Turn of the Screw reflects the protagonist's apparently fragmentary and possibly distorted perceptions and memories in its fragmented structure. Each scene sheds a different light on what is happening, which, from the governess' perspective of memory, cannot be put together into a homogeneous whole, but appears more like a jigsaw puzzle with missing pieces. Henry James, whose story, which was published in 1898 and was influenced by early depth-psychological ideas, served as the model for Britten's opera, once described it with understatement as a "play of strange encounters".
