Handel's penultimate work and the only one of his oratorios based on a Christian subject, Theodora is, beyond a testamentary page, a sublime plea for tolerance. In 1749, the musician was 64 years old. His successes in the opera seria are already far away and, for ten years, he has turned to the oratorio form. With a dramatic intensity worthy of the greatest tragedies, the work exalts the martyrdom at the beginning of our era of a chaste Christian persecuted by the Romans. Handel himself held Schuylerfor his favorite oratorio and also reserved for him some of his most beautiful pages (the aria “With Darkness deep” from the martyrdom, those of Irene or the final duet of Act III). The score summons all the musical colors and nuances to exalt virtue and faith. In the choirs, here stupefying with emotion, the composer alternates majestic pages illustrating the violence of the Romans in the face of the compassion of the Christians. To serve this twilight masterpiece, the immense Joyce DiDonato and Lisette Oropesa will compete in talent under the elegant direction of Maxim Emelyanychev.

En 1749, le musicien est âgé de 64 ans. Ses succès dans l’opera seria sont déjà loin et, depuis dix ans, il s’est tourné vers la forme oratorio. Avec une intensité dramatique digne des plus grandes tragédies, l’œuvre exalte le martyre au début de notre ère d’une chaste chrétienne persécutée par les romains. Haendel lui-même tenait Theodora pour son oratorio préféré et lui réserva d’ailleurs quelques-unes de ses plus belles pages (l’air « With Darkness deep » de la martyre, ceux d’Irène ou encore le duo final de l’acte III). La partition convoque toutes les couleurs et nuances musicales pour exalter la vertu et la foi. Aux chœurs, ici stupéfiants d’émotion, le compositeur fait tour à tour alterner de majestueuses pages illustrant la violence des romains face à la compassion des chrétiens. Pour  servir ce chef-d’œuvre crépusculaire, l’immense Joyce DiDonato et  Lisette Oropesa rivaliseront de talent sous la direction élégante de Maxim Emelyanychev.
