Amerika’s bekendste bariton, Thomas Hampson, staat bekend om zijn buitengewoon bezielde en technisch vlekkeloze vertolkingen. Als liedzanger is geen werk hem beter op het lijf geschreven dan Mahlers Des Knaben Wunderhorn, een verzameling van liederen die hij al twee keer opnam: één keer met piano en één keer met de eerste lessenaars van de Wiener Symphoniker (Deutsche Grammophon). Mahler ging voor Des Knaben Wunderhorn uit van teksten van volksliederen, gebundeld in het gelijknamige boek. Thema’s als natuur, devotie, verlangen, liefde, afscheid, dood en het plezier van een kind komen aan bod in verhalen over bijvoorbeeld Antonius die voor de vissen predikt, over dode soldaten die toch op het appèl verschijnen en een zangwedstrijd tussen een nachtegaal en een koekoek met een ezel als scheidsrechter. Meesterlijk georkestreerd zijn de liederen nu eens ironisch, dan weer humoristisch of onverwacht surrealistisch.

In 1876 startte Tchaikovsky een excentrieke briefwisseling met Nadezjda von Meck, een rijke weduwe die de Russische componist 13 jaar lang financieel zou ondersteunen. De enige voorwaarde was dat ze elkaar nooit in het echt zouden zien. Tchaikovsky besloot zijn Vierde symfonie aan haar te wijden en hield haar op de hoogte van zijn progressie. “De inleiding,” zo schreef hij, “is de kiem van de hele symfonie en meteen ook het centrale thema. Het is het noodlot, het zwaard van Damocles dat boven ons hangt, een kracht die we enkel lijdzaam kunnen ondergaan.” Turbulenties in Tchaikovsky’s persoonlijke leven – zoals een kort, overhaast en rampzalig afgelopen huwelijk met een jonge conservatoriumstudente, heel wat depressies en uiteindelijk ook een zelfmoordpoging – beïnvloedden de symfonie in hoge mate. Daarnaast is het werk echter ook een reflectie op Beethovens Vijfde symfonie. Tchaikovsky’s inleidende fanfare heeft daarbij ongeveer dezelfde functie als Beethovens bekende viernotenmotief.

America's most famous baritone, Thomas Hampson, is known for his exceptionally soulful and technically flawless renditions. As a lieder singer, no work fits him better than Mahler's Des Knaben Wunderhorn , a collection of songs that he has already recorded twice: once with piano and once with the first music stands of the Wiener Symphoniker (Deutsche Grammophon). Mahler went for Des Knaben Wunderhornbased on texts of folk songs, collected in the book of the same name. Themes such as nature, devotion, longing, love, farewell, death and the pleasure of a child are discussed in stories about, for example, Antonius who preaches to the fish, about dead soldiers who nevertheless appear at roll call and a singing competition between a nightingale and a cuckoo with a donkey as a referee. Masterfully orchestrated, the songs are sometimes ironic, sometimes humorous or unexpectedly surreal.

In 1876, Tchaikovsky started an eccentric exchange of letters with Nadezhda von Meck, a wealthy widow who would support the Russian composer financially for 13 years. The only condition was that they would never see each other in real life. Tchaikovsky concluded his Fourth Symphonyto her and kept her informed of his progress. “The introduction,” he wrote, “is the germ of the whole symphony and also its central theme. It is fate, the sword of Damocles that hangs over us, a force that we can only bear with patience.” Turbulences in Tchaikovsky's personal life – such as a short, hasty and disastrous marriage to a young conservatory student, many depressions and eventually a suicide attempt – influenced the symphony to a great extent. In addition, however, the work is also a reflection on Beethoven's Fifth Symphony . Tchaikovsky's introductory fanfare has roughly the same function as Beethoven's well-known four-note motif.
