‘In His love and in His pity he redeemed them. Alleluia!’ The haunting call of a shofar; the drama of Judas’ descent into Hell; the despair of Christ’s crucifixion; the climax of the Ascension – beauty and drama leading to one of the most moving finales in the whole of the classical repertoire. The Apostles shows composer Edward Elgar at the height of his musical powers and is considered by many to be his finest choral work. The piece tells the story of the early disciples of Jesus as ordinary men and women, who faced serious doubts about their faith, just as Elgar did, and shows their part in the extraordinary events of Jesus’ life, death and resurrection. Powerful, beautiful and highly moving.
