TOLOMEO RE D'EGITTO - Trailer

Antihero Tolomeo, betrayed by his mother, throne from the throne, robbed of his fiancée and driven into exile in Cyprus, only wants to put an end to his life and is surprised by life in the process. This year's HÄNDEL-FESTSPIELE will show Handel's opera about the suicidal King of Egypt for the first time at the STAATSTHEATER. In his capacity as Artistic Director of the Royal Academy of Music, Handel sponsored the performances of Italian operas - primarily his own - at London's King's Theater on Haymarket. In the 1727/28 season he presented three works of his own production there: Riccardo Primo , Siroe and Tolomeo . The latter was quickly forgotten after its premiere on April 30, 1728 - wrongly!

Shooting star Cameron Shahbazi can be seen for the first time in a title role at STAATSTHEATER. With the role of Tolomeo he follows in the footsteps of the castrato world star and Handel's favorite Senesino, who was on stage at the premiere alongside the rival prima donuts Francesca Cuzzoni and Faustina Bordoni. The prominent Italian baroque conductor Federico Maria Sardelli, who led the 2015 gala concert in , made his operatic debut at the 2020 Handel Festival. Benjamin Lazar, director of poetic productions at STAATSTHEATER such as The Children of Olympus , Pelleas and Melisande and the Karlsruhe audience favorite Riccardo Primo by candlelight, staged the new staging of the HÄNDEL-FESTSPIELE 2020 and thus closed one of the last gaps in the program.
